Dear Reader,

Welcome to issue 22. Another jam-packed issue; from articles on how to watch UK TV from Turkey, to the history of the upcoming 10th Ladies' Lunch, to what to do for Halloween, and a packed Classifieds section.

We've secured more discounts (the Marmara Spa, and Farilya Farm Horse riding), and we've begun to integrate some changes to the newsletter and website from readers feedback.

Hopefully there's something for everyone in this issue.

Happy reading,

From The Editor...

After 21 newsletters, just over 3,000 emails, and about 500hrs work, I'm happy to say that we have now received our 1,000th subscriber. With a larger subscription base, and with our 1 year anniversary due soon, I wanted to give you a quick update on the future of the Bodrum Bulletin.

So what's ahead?
I've carefully read through all the responses to the newsletter survey, and have already implemented some changes - especially to the website (see the PC corner below). You've given us a lot of feedback and ideas for new material, and you've also expressed that you would prefer a subscription model rather than us asking for donations each issue. With that in mind, the donations section has now been removed from the newsletter (but remains on the website for now).

With the donations removed, I have been looking into a subscription model in more detail. First I'd like to take this opportunity to say that the Bodrum Bulletin was never started with a view to make money, any money received goes towards the running costs and development of the newsletter. To find out more about who we are and why we're doing what we are, see the 'About Us' article on the website HERE.

Free and Premium Editions
With the start of 2010, we are thinking about introducing two editions of the newsletter. The first will be a "Free Edition" which will be a stripped-out newsletter, featuring only minimal information (but still enough to be useful!). The second edition will be a "Premium Edition" for paying subscribers only, and will feature the usual content that you're used to. There will be a small annual charge for the premium edition; which with the help of our parent company, DMCubed, will be payable via either an online PayPal or an online Barclaycard payment system. As a special thanks, all of those who have donated before the release of this issue (22nd October, 2009), you will receive 1 year free premium subscription.

So what about now?
The full newsletter will remain free until the end of the year. When the time is right I will give you more information about the subscription model and how to subscribe.

What more can we expect?
For 2010, we're looking at introducing a few more sections; perhaps a regular photography competition, more discounts, more legal advice, and much more. I will also be looking at a subtle re-design to make the newsletter easier to read.

So what do you think? Please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you have any questions or concerns about the changes.

All the best, and I hope you continue to enjoy reading the Bodrum Bulletin.

Dave.

Book Sale Thanks

I wish it would rain more often! On Saturday we raised 1325TL for the animals.  Liz Cook took most of the remaining books and sold them at the Bitez bit pazar raising another 170TL.  A staggering total of 1495TL.

Thank you to those who helped on the day, to those who donated books, jam and chutney and to those who spent money, and, of course, to Defne Restaurant.

I am proposing to hold the next one in February when we will have the new season's marmalade available.

WANTED: Live in Nanny

We are a young professional looking for a live in nanny. The nanny is expected to be a family member to grow our family. We have a 16 month boy and 3 and 5 year old girls. Our expectation from our new family member is to take care of the kids and do minor-light house work in a reasonable period of time during the day- and in some rare cases in the evening or night and while doing this to speak English to the kids that they can grab some words and the voice of the language.

We are very flexible in giving free time and actually most of the activities to be carried out with the kids are fun activities in nice places. You will be treated exactly as a family member with all benefits and responsibilities. We are living in Istanbul (in Nisantasi – heart of the city) and move to a resort area (usually to Bodrum) in summer time. The family usually have good time fun with the kids, a lot of leisure activities. We already have a house-keeper and the mother is off for a couple of more years.

Let’s discuss the terms and conditions if you are interested in working with us for long term. We look forward to hearing from you.

Farilya Farm Horseriding
Recomended

Set in one of the peninsula's oldest villages of Farilya, Farilya Farm offers horseriding lessons and trekking with some of the best views around from a traditional farm and stable setting. Here the only sounds you'll hear are the sounds of nature - there are no nearby roads, so it's a safe environment for all riders.

Farilya Farm Horse Riding - Bodrum

Catering for all ages, we offer pony rides for younger children, lessons for older children and adults, and of course, we're famous for longer treks in the surrounding countryside, including trips to the desertted Greek village of Girel, and the many Lelegian ruins.

For those that don't want to ride, there's still plenty to do; we have a cafe, children's play area, and lots of animals to get to know - ducks, chickens, goats, dogs, cats, and of course horses.

Lessons start from 45TL for 45minutes, and treks start from 45TL per hour (discounts available for multiple purchases).

Bodrum Bulletin readers will receive a further 5TL discount off these prices, so with lessons and treks starting from just 40TL, come to us for the best riding and views on the peninsula.

Having Fun Like Turks

In the first of our features, Lena re-tells an amusing story of how Turks differ from other Europeans.

A friend of mine called from Germany. He said a journalist colleague of ours was coming to Ankara for a favourable article he wanted to write on Turkish-EU relationships. My name and phone number were given to him and I was asked to be of assistance, which I accepted, a way to help our country.

We met the next day and had tea.
- I asked him where he wanted to go.
- "To the Kocatepe mosque, the biggest of your capital Ankara", he replied.
- "Why?" I asked, "are you a Muslim?"
He wasn’t. Just interested…
We went. He kept on asking me about the diameter of the dome, the weight of the chandeliers, the dimension of the hall, the capacity of the court… He first asked, then gave the answers…

In the evening he said he wanted to have fun like Turks do......Continue reading this article online, HERE

Watching UK TV Overseas

A common question we get asked is about the best way to watch UK TV from your house in Turkey. With this in mind, we asked Neil, who manages UK TV Access to write up a quick article summarising the options available, without requiring a 3m Satellite dish!

First, some history... Currently UK TV licensing dictates that only people resident in the UK can view TV stations online, hence if you are outside the UK, you will get an error, and the "stream" will not play. In case you're wondering, when your computer is connected to the internet your connection is given a unique number (or IP address), computer systems can use this IP address to detect the rough location of your computer (to give you an idea, of how this works, visit the link HERE).

There are various ways to get around this location detection, and provide a working solution. The legalities of such solutions will not be discussed here, we simply wish to inform you of what's available.

There are basically just three ways to watch UK TV online from abroad;

  1. Placeshifting; Duplicating a private UK TV signal from your house in the UK to a remote location
  2. VPNs (Virtual Private Networks); Connecting to the Internet via a secure UK location
  3. Web Proxies; Re-directing selective web traffic via a UK location

To see the advantages and disadvantages of each system continue reading this article online, HERE

The Tenth Annual Ladies' Lunch

This feature is from Jane Baxter, coordinator of this years' Ladies' Lunch, which takes place on the 6th November.

It’s hard to believe that this is our tenth annual Ladies’ Lunch. What started as a raid on Priscilla’s address book has developed into an annual event with more names than even her address book can hold!

If you are new to the Bodrum Peninsula and haven’t been to the lunch previously let me give you a little “lunch” history. Back in 2000 I thought that a lunch for those ladies living and working in the Bodrum area would be a great networking event and I asked Priscilla to open up her filofax; it was to be an opportunity to meet other ladies in a similar position, a chance to catch up with all those friends and acquaintances one rarely sees through the busy summer months, a possibility to find out what is going on during the winter months, a chance to dress up a little more than every day Bodrum life generally requires and above all a nice day out.

That first year we held the lunch at Sea Garden and we were pretty amazed when 66 people signed up, some of whom neither of us had ever met. It turned into an annual event, going from strength to strength and our record was 143 attendees. We’ve lunched in hotels: Sea Garden, Dedeman, Karia Princess, The Marmara, Bodrium and last year we were at the Movenpick, it’s always nice to see the local hotels from a guest point of view. We’ve only lunched in one restaurant, Café la Vela in the Bodrum Marina Yacht Club complex, but we’ve done it twice and it’s always so good that it is our chosen venue for this year.

Our mission at the Ladies' Lunch is a simple one...Continue reading this article online, HERE

Street Animals and Animal Welfare: Bodrum's Neuter and Return program - Update

Çağıtay Clinic has confirmed that they have spayed/neutered almost 50 dogs from the Konacık area since the program there began.  The two vets, Önder and Akın, of the clinic also very kindly donated their time and skills one recent Sunday when they came to the Turgutreis shelter and spayed 13 dogs and one cat there, so many thanks to them for that.  A dart gun for tranquilizing hard to catch dogs will be purchased with the proceeds of the weekly quiz nights held at Sandy's in Gümbet and organized by Brian, Angela and Annette.  The dart gun will be kept at Çağıtay Clinic but will be lent to any vet on the peninsula who has need of it.  This will be a great asset, so many thanks to Brian, Angela and Annette for all their hard work which made this possible, and also to all who came to the quiz nights and supported other events.

For more information on Bodrum's Neuter and Return Program, click HERE.

  • Q69: I've been collecting "Positive" points from Petrol Ofisi for a long time, but have never received any benefits. I've tried to navigate their website, and I've tried to contact them, but I'm still none the wiser - can anyone shed any light on how to reap the benefits?

New Answers:

  • Q68: I would like to park my car at Bodrum-Milas airport for 2 or 3 days, does anyone know what my best option is - should I just go to the normal airport car park?

A68.1: Don’t park at the airport - it's expensive! We use Çelik Otopark just before you get to the airport on the left hand side (second one not first) he charges 10TL a day and takes you and picks you up also cleans the car very trustworthy and efficient. Call him on 05326751754 first in case he is at the airport let him know what time you will arrive. He even writes down the mileage of the car and takes all your details for the return pickup. Great service and cheaper than the airport parking. --Dawn

A68.2: You park it in the car parks om the left before airport named Gunes saati. Good price and they clean your car. I always do this and on return they collect you at airport door. --Clare Gunes
