Dear Reader,

Welcome to issue 23. With the recent cold spell in Bodrum, we thought it was a good opportunity to take a quick look at heating options available in Turkey. Also, with the help from Muharrem Sev from the "M Team", we've got some good advice on moisture and mould problems.

Further to our announcement last issue regarding the introduction of premium content to the newsletter and website, we have set a yearly fee of £12. As a special offer, if you pay via the website before the 1st January, you will automatically receive 14 months' subscription. To purchase your premium content subscription, click HERE. If you do not wish to subscribe to the premium content you will continue to receive the free newsletter (which will contain calendar items only), you will not have access to the extra articles and features. Note that if you have donated to the Bodrum Bulletin before the 22nd October 2009 you do not need to pay a fee for the first year.

Happy reading,

David Good - Editor

Heating a Bodrum Home

We commonly get asked about the best way to heat a house over winter. While there's no easy answer, here is an overview of some of the common options to heat a Bodrum villa. This is intended as a guide only, and does not cover all options, advantages or disadvantages.

Heating a Bodrum house is a very different art to heating a European house - Bodrum houses aren't insulated the same. In Europe we're used to thick cavity walls and insulation. Here you're lucky to have a painted hollow 'earthquake' brick, with a light plaster. When you put heat into a room it doesn't stick around! Because of this, conventional 'whole-house' heating methods such as central heating just don't work effectively due to their slow nature. Commonly, higher single point heat sources are used in specific family areas, these are sometimes supplemented with 'background' heating.

You'll probably look to heat a house from late November to early April, with January and February being the coldest months.

Whatever heating method(s) you choose, here are some good tips... Continue reading this article online, HERE

Mould, Moisture Control and Dehumidifiers

This article has been kindly provided by Muharrem Sev from the "M Team"

If moisture levels are over 60-80% humidity for more than a few days, mould will grow and spread on walls and other cold surfaces in the house. To start with, a simple digital humidity meter should be used to measure the levels of humidity. If the readings are over the suggested levels, then corrective action must be taken. Reducing the humidity and moisture levels below 60% humidity will maintain a dry and mould free environment.

Where to look for dampness and mould.... continue reading this article online, HERE

Denizli Cockerels

This feature comes from Jan Ozay.

Most cities in Turkey are famous for something & the city of Denizli is no exception.

Denizli is approximately three and a half hours drive from Bodrum & close to Pamukkale. The city is famous for three things 'Kız', 'toz' and 'horoz' - or 'beautiful girls', 'dust' and 'cockerels'! The cockerel is a symbol of the city and there are statues of them all over. They are proud of their roosters.

The Denizli Rooster is a pure gene breed, renowned for its beauty, good health and immunity to illness and for its amazing voice. They have the longest crowing in Turkey and champions have been known to crow for up to 30 seconds! The roosters have black eyes, dark gray or purple legs and a large big axe comb. It has long legs, a long and strong neck, a broad and deep chest.

They are divided into three groups according to their colours and combs. However, the most prominent distinction is made according to the various positions they adopt as they crow; Lion crowing, Wolf crowing, Hero crowing & the Mist crow. The timing of the crowing is vital and it should start slow, increasing to a fast tempo and ending slowly. Denizli holds cockerel crowing competitions! They are the longest crowers in the world!!! How to get from Izmir bus station to airport (NEW)

  1. Go downstairs in Izmir Otogar (bus station), and get bus to Gaziemir, ask to get off at Tansaş (it was 2TL per person about a month ago and takes roughly 45mins).
  2. There is a taxi rank across the road from Tansaş, get one to the airport, (for two people it was 12TL in total).

Reverse this from the airport to the Otogar if there is not a Havaş bus at the airport when you arrive.

New Answers:

  • Q70: I have an old solar water heating system that's surplus to my needs, I'd like to try to connect it to our swimming pool; does anyone know if this is possible, or would like to tackle the challenge?

A70.1: My pool in South Africa was heated with solar panels. It was connected through about 8 solar panels fitted on an out building. The water was drawn through the pump and filter system in the normal way but instead of going directly to the pool passed through the panels first and then into the pool. The pool held about 150 tons of water and stayed at a constant luke warm temperature all year round. --Ray

    A70:
    Have any advice to add?

  • Q69: I've been collecting "Positive" points from Petrol Ofisi for a long time, but have never received any benefits. I've tried to navigate their website, and I've tried to contact them, but I'm still none the wiser - can anyone shed any light on how to reap the benefits?

A69.1: It is my understanding that you have to have the POsitive card in CONJUNCTION with the HSBC Pegasus Credit Card to gain the points that can be used against Pegasus flights. You have to "link" the two cards and then only have to present the PO card for swiping when buying petrol ...and it must be given in advance. I don't know if the PO card alone will give you any advantages. --Jane

A69.2: Pasililar Petrol Station at the Bitez Junction have the catalogues for the goods that can be exchanged for points collected. Bit like the old 'Green Shield Stamp" catalogue. However, don't get too excited: after collecting for two cars for two years, we have about enough points for an electric kettle! --Liz

  • A0: Can I buy self-raising flour in Bodrum?
    A0.1:
Some people have found self-raising flour in Migros.
    A0.2:
If you can't find it, simply mix 1 teaspoon baking powder (Hamur Kabartma Tozu), with 200g of plain flour.
    A0.3:
Yes, there is self-raising flour. Go to the normal flour section at Migros (or any super market)  and nearby you will see cake mixes. Usually Dr. Oetker, but Migros do their own also.  These are called 'Kek Karisim' in Turkish and are in boxes of 500gms.  The one called 'Sade Kek Karisim' is self raising flour.  It is very good and reliable. At Metro on one occasion I found the same flour by Sinangil in 1 kilo packets, but it is not always there. --Audrey
