Dear Reader,

Welcome to issue 25, from a windy and wet Bodrum. Not long until Christmas now! With that in mind, we've got some seasonal celebrations in the calendar section, an advert from a local organic turkey supplier, and a great article on how to use solar energy to keep your house warm!

We've also got an introduction and plea for help and donations from The Yalıkavak Animal Welfare Group, who have recently come together to coordinate animal welfare in Yalıkavak, and would like your help.

Also, a quick reminder that Premium Content will start in the New Year, so if you want to continue to benefit from the full newsletter, and all website content, please take a look at the subscription page or click the image below. You'll also see us implementing subtle changes to the newsletter and website over the next few weeks.

Happy reading,

David Good - Editor

  • NEW: Slow Food Group; Adasofra - 8pm, Ortakent
    Next Event: Adasofra, Ortakent

Current members of Slow Food International are invited, together with new potential members or house guests that have never attended a Slow Food Bodrum event before.

The venue, originally built in 1602, is one of the very few Bodrum tower houses still standing. The tower house is a one bedroom hotel, perhaps the smallest hotel in the world and will be available for viewing on the evening. The restaurant placed within the lush garden of this tower is called ‘adasofra.’ Its menu is decorated with Mediterranean flavours and it has become, in one very short time, the "in" place for Bodrum foodies. This is the place to bring your friends that are visiting for the holidays. Great ambiance and delicious food. Maximum 30 members and guests so book early.

    Menu:
       Appetizers
            Green salad with smoked salmon
            Hummus Fried leek balls
       Main Course
            Spicy chicken with grilled pumpkin
          Or
Grilled meatballs with roasted eggplant on flat bread
       Desert
            Crème brulee
       Tea or coffee

Two glasses of wine or local alcoholic beverages (rakı/beer) Featuring: Leona Narince white wine and Leona Kalecik Karası red wine.

Member cost: 60TL. For more information, or to book, contact me on the email address below.

New York - Bodrum House Swap?

I have a 1 bedroom apartment in New York City, in Chelsea. I have friends who live in Bodrum and I want to consider an exchange there for 2-3 weeks in June/early July, 2010. Would you be interested in visiting NYC over Christmas/New Year and/or June/July?

Wanted: Traveling Companion

Island

Is there anyone interested in going off traveling to some where hot and interesting for a few weeks early in the new year? I'm a mature female living on the Bodrum peninsula who has traveled quite a lot both with friends and independently. I'm fairly easy going, not very organised and don't really mind where I go unless it's somewhere I've traveled to recently.

I'm not keen on organised tours and couldn't cope with a"worrier" (always another train, bus etc...) I have quite a few ideas and lots of information but am open to suggestions. Another female(s) would be easier for room shares as this would keep costs down although I'll see what response I get. Maybe a mixed group if there are several people interested but I don't want to end up as "Tour Leader"!

For Sale: Huge Selection of Motorcycle Parts

Superbike My son, Ben Welch is a widely known and respected motorcycle professional in the U.S. He has also raced at Donnington Park and the Isle of Man TT. He is a skilled motorcycle mechanic (MMI Trained, and worked in the best high-performance shops in San Diego, Ca. before opening his own shop in 2005) and an accomplished roadracer (AMA  Superbike, SuperSport 600 and 750, WSMC and many others). He also has done road testing for Cycle World and Motorcyclist magazines and has been featured in many of their articles and photos over the years.  In 2007 he moved to Turkey with his wife and two daughters and he brought EVERYTHING with him. Since then, unfortunately they have divorced.

Now he has returned to America leaving 19-year accumulation of tools and equipment and one-of-a-kind memorabilia behind. He would love for these items to be in the hands of cycle enthusiasts who can appreciate and enjoy them --- and, of course, he needs money to start over.

These items are stored (tightly but safely) in a "legal" cargo container here in Urla. Anyone sincerely interested can come and check it out. However,  I did not fit these items into the container and don't know one tool from another, and so cannot dig through item by item to sell separately. I also speak only English.

So that's my situation. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Items will not be split. If you are interested in buying the whole lot, please contact me.

Solar Energy in Turkey

...The history, the future and the new technology opportunities

To assist readers with specific interests, this article is broken down into the following main headings:-

  1. What is Solar Energy?
  2. Why use Solar Technologies
  3. The ways in which we use Solar Energy
  4. Types of Solar Panel
  5. History and development of Solar Energy usage in Turkey
  6. Great news for Bodrum home owners

1. What is solar energy?

Solar energy consists of the light and heat emitted by the sun, in the form of electromagnetic radiation. With today’s technology, we are able to capture this radiation and turn it into usable forms of solar energy – such as heating or electricity. We've used the Sun for drying clothes and food for thousands of years, but only recently have we been able to use it for generating power – and the sun, despite being 150 million kilometres away, is amazingly powerful – in fact, every minute, enough energy arrives at the Earth to meet our demands for a whole year - if only we could harness it properly

2. Why use solar technologies?

Solar energy technologies offer a clean, renewable and domestic energy source, and are essential.... to continue reading this article; click HERE.

  • Q77: Is there a qualified chiropodist anywhere on the Bodrum peninsula? By chiropodist, I do not mean someone who does pedicures (as in beauty salons). We are looking for someone who has undergone proper training and has a thorough understanding of foot care as this is very important in treating diabetics who are prone to problems with their feet.

New Answers:

  • Q73: We are thinking of switching from our ADSL internet service to a 'dongle'. Are dongles reliable in the Bodrum area, what are the costs and can anyone recommend good current deals?

A73.1: Whilst we have Ttnet ADSL, we wanted a backup solution, and have done a little research on 3G dongles. The offerings from Avea and Turkcell are on a contract basis, and tie you in for a period (one for 1 year, 1 for 2 years) they give you access a download limit each month "use it or loose it". Vodafone on the other hand will do one on "pay as you go" basis, and whilst more costly per GB (35 TL for 1 GB approx) you can keep using your allocation until it is used up, then buy more units, which was what we needed for occasional use. It works very well here in Koyunbaba Köyü, signal strength excellent, speed adequate, and I think speeds will increase as technology develops. The other benefit is that we are assured the Vodafone "stick" is unlocked and should be usable with other providers' SIM cards in UK and elsewhere, though we have not tested this yet. Total cost for stick, SIM card and starter units was 250TL. Just like a new mobile phone SIM, it takes 24 hours or so to activate your number and will not work until this happens. This came as a surprise to both us and the retailer in Yalıkavak! Hope this is helpful. --Colin and Kathy

A73.2: I have a Turkcell dongle which I purchased in July at the start of the 3G introduction in Bodrum. The cost of the dongle was 299TL on "pay as you go" then its yours for ever, you can buy 2, 4, 6, 8GB add-on units. In my case 4GB, which I use mostly for skype (1hr = 250MB approx) 4GB is more that enough each month including surfing, emails as long as you don't download films or music. The cost of the top up is 44TL for 4GB or just top up to 4GB that can be as little as 20TL. If you go back to the UK you just buy a little credit to reactivate just like a phone when you come back. The reception inside a villa will only be 2G (sometimes a little slow) depending where you live, but is more than enough to connect to the internet then take outside and get 3G when the weather changes. Hope that answers the question, go to the Turkcell marina shop, Mat speaks very good English.

Editor: Internet dongles work via high-speed mobile phone networks. Currently, not all the networks have full "3G" coverage across all of the peninsula, and will only pick up a "2.75G, EDGE" connection. If speed is important to you, please check with the network you're considering whether the coverage in your area is "3G", or "2.75G (EDGE)".

  • Q71: I am buying a car here in Turkey, and want to know if I must have a Turkish driving licence, or can I use my European driving licence? If I indeed need a Turkish driving licence, what is the procedure to get one, and how much does it cost?

A71: No you don't need a turkish licence. --James Rawson

A71.2: Sorry to disagree, but you are wrong, legally after 1 year of being here you must get a Turkish licence. You have to go to the traffic police at the deed office complete forms have photos have your European licence translated and take a medical. I have double-checked with a lawyer and a friend at police station and found the same; if you do not get a Turkish licence within 1 year any insurance is invalid - god forbid you have an accident. --Dawn

A71.3: If you drive for more than 12 months you do need a Turkish licence --Anon

A71.4: No you don't need a Turkish driving license if you have a European license. Some European driving licences can be converted into Turkish Driving licenses. I would recommend you to get a takipci to handle all the paperwork for you. --Fevzi

Editor: This question seems to be creating a variety of different answers, so we've asked attorney Berk Çektir, who writes for Today's Zaman to take a look and provide his insight. We'll report back next issue, and keep an eye on his column in Today's Zaman.
