Dear
Reader,
Welcome to issue 33. It's been a much warmer couple of weeks here in Bodrum, the sun has shone, and there's been the smell of cut grass and BBQs in the air.
Lots of content for regular subscribers and Premium Content subscribers this issue. For all subscribers; if you have a pet over here, make sure you read this issue's Animal Corner - which updates about the nasty creepy-crawlies that could harm your pet. Also information about an exciting new cafe in Gümüşlük offering free Turkish classes and dance lessons, and a couple of coffee shops in Bodrum in the What's New section.
Thanks to all of you who clicked the "Quick Poll" last week. It was a great success, so you'll see the results of the first poll below, together with a new question - please click the appropriate response on your way through. Also please send through your suggestions for a question.

Bitez Book Sale Thanks |
|
| |
The book sale on Saturday and the sale of the leftover books on Sunday raised a huge 1384.50TL.
Thank you very much to everyone who brought and bought books, marmalade and chutney. My thanks also to those who helped me on the day. The weather was beautiful and with the homing of 5 adorable puppies, we were warmed inside and out.
I thought you might like to know that the money raised from the previous book sale neutered and vaccinated 5 dogs, neutered and vaccinated 6 cats, and treated 3 dogs. The next one is planned for May and I will advertise the date as soon as it is confirmed.

Homes Needed |
|
| |

I am looking to home some female puppies (about 5 weeks old). The mother is a Doberman Dogo Argentino mix has been mated with a pure Doberman.
I would like to give the puppies a good home, so I am asking for a donation of 100TL per puppy (50TL will cover their vaccinations, and 50TL will be donated to the Yalıkavak Animal Welfare Group).
All puppies are healthy and in very good shape but need to be re-homed quickly - the mother is beginning to be aggressive towards them.

Café Karadut, Gümüşlük |
|
| |
 |
As if plucked straight from a London park, this season brings a charming café to Gümüşlük village. Located behind the mosque, and next to a children's playground and large grass area with water feature, this lovely cafe is a relaxing getaway for passing a lazy afternoon.
The owner, Gülay, hopes that the café will become a place where like-minded people can meet. The Café serves refreshments and drinks all day, it also specialises in home made cakes, mantı (Turkish ravioli), and Su Börek. It also has free WiFi access.
Gülay has also started Turkish conversational classes every Wednesday 2pm-3pm, and dance classes (Waltz and Cha-Cha), every Thursday 5pm-6pm. Both classes are free, and offer a great way to meet people. If you'd like to participate in either class, drop Gülay a line.

Springtime brings a fantastic time of year to explore the Bodrum area, and is also a great time to walk your dogs, but beware; unfortunately it's also tick and sand-fly season. So here's the low-down on the nasties that your 're pet is likely to encounter. Please also don't underestimate the risks; both our dogs have Leishmania, and have undergone a long and expensive treatment.
 |
Fleas:
Fleas are responsible for a variety of problems in animals, feeding on their blood. Notable problems include skin irritation, allergic reactions, anaemia. Fleas can also carry tapeworms.
Recommended prevention:
High quality flea-drop treatment applied monthly, or K9 Advantix treatment |
 |
Ticks:
Ticks can cause disease and illnesses directly. Primarily, they are responsible for anaemia, dermatitis, and paralysis. They can also carry a variety of other diseases, some of which include babesiosis, anaplasmosis, ehrlichia, East Coast fever, relapsing fever, rocky mountain spotted fever and, of course, Lyme disease.
Recommended prevention:
High quality flea-drop treatment applied monthly, or K9 Advantix
AND
Paraband (Scalibor) Deltamethrin Collar. |

Sand Flies:
You probably haven't heard of Sand flies, or Leishmania, but in the Bodrum area, Leishmania is one of the most common diseases among dogs, and is a real threat to your dog. Similar to mosquitoes, sand flies are responsible for transmission of the disease leishmania. Leishmania is a parasite of blood cells which also affects the spleen and liver. Signs of disease include anaemia, loss of appetite, severe weight loss, fever, bleeding, enlarged liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. Many dogs develop skin lesions and some have swollen limbs and joints. Inflammation of the eye can also occur. The time between infection and the appearance of disease can sometimes be up to 7 years. The drugs used to treat this infection in people are not as effective in dogs. If untreated, 70-90% of infected animals die. If treated, 90% recover but many still harbor the parasite. Euthanasia of infected dogs is sometimes recommended.
Recommended prevention: Paraband (Scalibor) Deltamethrin Collar.
AND
K9 Advantix treatment. |
Ask your local vet for high quality flea and tick drops, and for a Paraband collar.
K9 Advantix remains one of the most effective multi-purpose treatments available. Unfortunately, it's not easy to get hold of in Turkey, so for more information about K9 Advantix treatment, and how to get it delivered to Turkey for 15TL per treatment, see our article HERE. |

NEW: Q96: I need internet and a telephone line installed in my villa in Torba next week. Can you recommend a reliable company?
NEW: A96.1: Currently you can only get a telephone line from TTNet, so you will need to go to a TTNet shop (e.g. there’s one opposite Oasis). TTNet are also the best supplier for ADSL internet too. There are 3rd party companies which can re-sell TTNet lines, but at the end of the day you are probably better going directly to TTNet. --EDITOR

NEW: Q95: We are currently experiencing problems in obtaining our Tapu and it would seem that taking legal action to obtain a "Temporary Precautionary Measure" on the title deeds will be prohibitively expensive. Is anyone aware of a good solicitor who may charge an affordable rate or, is anyone aware whether there is any way of proceeding with an injunction without the need for a solicitor?

Q92:
If a single person owns 3 apartments in a complex (and pays 3x the site fees), In site meetings and votes, are they entitled to have 3 votes or just one?
NEW: A92.1: It all depends on how many there are in total on your site, you cannot hold more than 1/3rd of all votes. i.e. 8 villas you have 3 you can only use 2 votes. It also depends on what is in your Yonetim Plani (Management Plan as these were changed in December 2007 or should have been updated with new laws). --Dawn (Simply Villa Management)
NEW: A92.2: We have 3 villas on a site and as such have 3 votes at the annual-general meetings (have had for 6 years now). I would imagine that flats are the same - you are basically 3 owners. --Ros
NEW: A92.3: Of course if you own them, then 3 votes are yours --Arzu

Q90: Has anyone found clear pickling vinegar anywhere? I have looked in Kipa, Migros and Metro without luck; I can only find grape vinegar (which is brown) or apple/cider (which is yellow).
NEW: A90.1: I don't know about the vinegar but there is a powder mix called "tursu kur" - maybe knorr not sure. I don't think there is clear vinegar in Turkey but I'll ask a friend and let you know. -- Arzu
