Reader,
Welcome to issue 38. Firstly, apologies for the slight lack of content this issue, this is largely due to my partner and I getting married on Sunday! Having said that, we've still got lots for you - including lots of information in the What's New section - make sure you don't miss the information about Bodrum's new English Language newspaper - Voices.
In addition, for Premium Content readers we have another free screen saver pack - this time containing photos from Lake Bafa - a beautiful lake about one hour away from Bodrum.
Premium Content this issue:

Please contact me if you know of a school, college or library that would be interested in a very good condition, eight volume set - the owners don't want any money, but would like to see them appreciated and used. The illustrations are a mixture of colour and black and white; the volumes were printed in the late '60s so provide an interesting insight into the world as it was then as well as information that is timeless.

Paşaoğlu Cafe/Restaurant |
|
|
Has anyone else discovered this delightful spot near the centre of Bodrum?
 |
Just down from the Otogar and opposite a relatively new Otopark, this bright, clean cafe has a quiet terrace away from the road. It is covered to protect you from the sun, and overlooks their garden which is currently fully of flowers. Gemma (an ex-student of Ayşegül) speaks very good English as well and Turkish and her own language, so you can communicate in a choice of languages! |
Prices are reasonable (an extra 10% discount is available for Bodrum Bulletin), but the peaceful atmosphere is a real bonus when you want a morning, lunchtime or afternoon break from the hot streets.

Book Sale Thanks! |
|
|
I am delighted to say that we raised 1296TL at the Book Sale on Saturday. This included 95TL from the raffle for the kilim which was won by Camille Sahin. Thanks to the generosity of local residents, we have also received donations of £60 and 20TL.
Thank you to everyone who helped on the day and to all who support our continuing efforts to raise money for the street animals of our peninsula.
I am planning the next book sale for September.

Herodotus Academy 3rd Age Academy Update |
|
|
 |
The admin team have started to explore the ideas generated at the meeting of 5 May 2010 so that we can plan future meetings and events. This is to report our progress so far.
Meetings during the summer will be restricted to topics appropriate for the time of year with the main programme starting in the autumn.
|
Possible summer topics include:
- Archaeological exploration in Gümüşlük. An evening meeting to be held in Gümüşlük. Date, venue and speaker to be advised.
- Tavla lessons and tournament. Possibilities to be investigated
- Book reading/Turkish literature. It was suggested that all those interested in this topic read a particular book with a Turkish theme (such as Birds Without Wings) during the summer and be ready to discuss it at a meeting in the autumn. Suggestions for titles welcomed.
Autumn programme
- Living in Turkey. A course led by Camille Şahin to cover family life and cross cultural communication.
- Turkish History and Culture. A series of eight lectures led by Semih Adıyaman and Selçuk Şahin.
- Organised walks. Existing groups to be contacted initially with a view to joining them. Need to cater for people individually according to age and fitness level.
- Conversation club for practising the Turkish language. A native Turkish speaker to lead a group for those wishing to pratise the Turkish they have learned.
- Arts and culture. A series of talks, dinners and visits to be arranged with visiting speakers.
- Turkish cookery. How to cook Turkish food at home to be demonstrated by a local Turkish village cook.
Excursions
After the success of the visit to Tire, Birgi and Aphrodisias a four day excursion is already being planned to the north Aegean region to include Assos, Troy and Pergamum.
The other ideas suggested at the meeting on 5 May are being explored. Further ideas and suggestions for speakers and group leaders are welcomed.

Voices Newspaper comes to Bodrum |
|
|

After several successful years covering news in Altinkum, the Voices Newspaper team has launched a sister paper for the Bodrum region. This long awaited paper-based newspaper will be a welcome addition to the Bodrum area since the closing of the Bodrum Observer in June 2008.
The first Bodrum edition of Voices was out yesterday (2nd June). The paper will be available every 2 weeks from all major markets (especially those opposite the bus stations and restaurants where foreign residents and tourists frequent). Initially copies will be free, and select content will also be available online via a website - details to follow shortly.
Make sure you pick up a copy for the latest Bodrum news.
Here at Bodrum Bulletin, we wish the Voices team the very best of luck and look forward to working with them.

Home Needed |

 |
Once again, I'm desperately appealing to anyone out there who can give a kind and loving home to my two 14 month old male dogs. I rescued them as puppies when I found them dumped on the site that my house was being built on. Since then they have lived with us in the house and are much loved pets. Unfortunately I have not found it easy to settle here in Turkey and are desperate to return home to UK, I cannot take them with me as I do not have a property in England and have to go back to stay with family, this leaves me with a dreadful dilemma, I can't abandon them and the thought of putting them in a dog pound fills me with dread, a couple of people suggested I should put them down! How could I do such a thing?
|
They are lovely natured dogs and spend the whole time playing happily together in the garden, they are wonderful house dogs too and at night sleep indoors and have never damaged any thing in the house. They have both been neutered and have a full and up to date vet history at Animana in Yalıkavak. If you think you can help and would like to meet them please contact me anytime. I will keep my fingers crossed and wait for a phone call.

NEW: Q111: How can I down load MP3s in Turkey? I only have a Turkish credit card and the UK iTunes site will only accept UK credit cards. The Turkish site from Apple only appears to offer iPhone apps. I tried another site but I received a message saying it was illegal for them to offer downloads in Turkey (I presume they could tell from my IP address).

Q103: We are intending to drive our Turkish registered car through Europe and ultimately back to the UK this summer. Does anyone have any experience of doing this? Apart from the green card is any other paperwork needed? How long should we allow for crossing the border on the outward and inward return journeys (bearing in mind we will be bringing back household items from the UK)? Should we expect any problems?
A103.1: Besides the green card you need a cryptic from the Turkish Automobil club - the closest one is in Izmir, which you have to pick up and pay personally at their office. Check their web site (www.turing.org.tr)for details. Your stay in Europe can not exceed 6 months. good luck. --Beatrix
NEW: A103.2: Take a look at this forum HERE, which has information from a couple of people who have driven to Turkey from the UK. --Lyn
