Welcome to issue 42. This issue's all about visas.

For those not aware, on the 14th of July, the regulations covering £10, 90 day Tourist Visas or simply "stamps" changed. In a nutshell, the changes closed the ability to do a back-to-back visa run. These changes (or more precisely the poor communication of the changes), created such a stir that on the 27th July the new regulations were "postponed", and everything's back as if nothing happened - or is it? The key word is postponed - it's widely believed that it will only be a matter of months before this issue will rear its head again. So with that in mind, you'd be well advised to read our article which documents the "proposed" change which very nearly happened.

And in case you're one of the many wondering about how "reciprocal" the relative (UK vs. Turkey) tourist and long-term visa are - you should give our second article a read.

The Seventh International Gümüşlük Classical Music Festival will begin on the 24th of July with its opening concert in Eklisia, Gümüşlük. The festival which has become a much anticipated event for classical music lovers, once again offers a full programme of Internationally recognised musical talent, under the roof of the 400 years old Eklisia. The festival, which has, since its inception in 2004 gathered worldwide acclaim, this year takes place between 24th of July and the 8th of September with its opening concert featuring the Argentinean pianist Valentin Surif. The small fishing village of Gümüşlük which becomes a stage for musicians who usually perform only on the world's most prestigious concert platforms will, this year also welcome two symphony orchestras.

Supported by the Gümüşlük Council, and organised by the Gümüşlük Arts and Culture Association, the festivals artistic director is Eren Levendoğlu, and its artistic advisor the Turkish 'state artist' and world-famous pianist Gülsin Onay.

As in previous years, throughout the duration of the festival young musicians will participate in the Eklisia Summer Music School, taking part in daily master classes with the visiting artists. In this year's summer school, courses will take place as follows: piano: 25 July - 10 August; flute: 11 - 18 August; violin: 13 - 21 August; cello:20 - 30 August. Participants in the summer school also perform throughout the festival period.

Over an idle chat earlier in the year Şeyda Durdu, Barbara Collins and I came up with the thought that we had time on our hands and maybe some skills that we could put to good use to benefit this lovely place that we now live in.

We thought there might be others like us in Yalıkavak who would wish to put something back into the community for the local people. People of many nationalities spend time here and could all contribute something.

We wondered if we could get organised to channel this potential. We wanted our focus to be on children, welfare, education and cultural exchange. We would like to make a worthwhile contribution to the local community.

We set up a Facebook group and invited people to join. We have had a positive response and now have over 40 members.

Following this we had a meeting with the Mayor, Mr Mustafa Saruhan, to ask if he would endorse us. He was very happy with our idea. He is providing support through his office and authorisation for our fund raising events. He is, of course, looking forward to the Yalıkavak Dostları Grubu achievements.

We now need people active, on the ground, and so we are calling on everyone to join with us and make our first project a success.

Our first project will be providing Ramazan Packets.
Ramazan is 11th August to 9th September and it is traditional to put together a selection of food items into a packet for those not so fortunate.

With everyone's help Yalıkavak Dostları can raise money for this, but we have to act quickly.

Our fundraising ideas so far are:

• Bring and Buy sale - we need plenty of items like books, good second-hand clothes, unwanted gifts (we won't tell!), and nearer the date (to be advised) home-made chutneys and cakes.
• Coffee morning - we are looking for somewhere to hold this.
• An auction - we need somewhere to hold this and local businesses/people to donate things to auction e.g. -a meal out.
• Fundraising Dinner and Quiz - again we'd need a host for the evening.
  

You may have other and better ideas and we would really like to hear from you, we are waiting!

The Yalıkavak Animal Welfare Group is desperately looking for volunteers to help us with the following projects:

• Caravan
  A caravan has kindly been donated to the group, which school children of Yalıkavak have been painting in bright colours:
  
  
  This caravan has a permanent place at the weekly Thursday market in Yalıkavak opposite the Zabita office. However, we desperately need volunteers (preferably bilingual Turkish-English), to help for a few hours on Thursdays each week to provide information to the public about our sponsorship programme and other works we do to help the animals. We also use the caravan as a base on Thursdays to re-home dogs/puppies.
  
  
• Bitez 2nd hand market on Sundays
  To raise extra income to cover the costs such as food for needy animals, medication, education etc, we are selling 2nd hand items such as clothes, shoes, books, household and kitchen ware etc... Volunteers with a car would be most welcome, to help every now and then. Also, if you have items for us to sell please drop these at the Yalıkavak Market on Thursdays.
  
  
• Caring for the neutered and sick animals:
  Once a street animal has been neutered it needs about 3 to 4 days rehabilitation. A sick animal needs some more time to recover. For this job volunteers are needed who will be able to help give food, medication and fresh water to the animals at a central Yalıkavak location. If you can spare one day a week, just a morning or an evening it will be great.
  After recovering the animal will go back to the place where we have picked it up.
