Denizli Cockerels
Most cities in Turkey are famous for something & the city of Denizli is no exception.
Denizli is approx three and a half hours drive from Bodrum & close to Pamukkale. The city is famous for three things 'Kiz', 'toz' and 'horoz' - or 'beautiful girls', 'dust' and 'cockerels'! The cockerel is a symbol of the city and there are statues of them all over. They are proud of their roosters.
The Denizli Rooster is a pure gene breed, renowned for its beauty, good health and immunity to illness and for its amazing voice. They have the longest crowing in Turkey and champions have been known to crow for up to 30 seconds! The roosters have black eyes, dark grey or purple legs and a large big axe comb It has long legs, a long and strong neck, a broad and deep chest.
They are divided into three groups according to their colours and combs. However, the most prominent distinction is made according to the various positions they adopt as they crow; Lion crowing, Wolf crowing, Hero crowing & the mist crow. The timing of the crowing is vital and it should start slow, increasing to a fast tempo and ending slowly. Denizli holds cockerel crowing competitions! They are the longest crowers in the world!!!
