Q46: Motor Boat tax

Q46: I am thinking of buying a 5m 70hp motor boat in Turkey. I have heard that there is an annual tax based on the size of the engine, and also that I need an 'operators licence' for a boat of this size. Does anyone know if this is correct, or where I can get more information?
A46.1: The law regarding boats is supposed to be changing in July this year. Up till now the yearly tax on boats was extremely expensive, that's why you see so many boats here with foreign flags. From July it is hopefully going to be a fraction of what it has been in the past and affordable. We don't have a private licence (evrak) at the moment so I can't give you more info, sorry. To use a boat in Turkish waters you have to have some sort of captains licence, translated into Turkish. Unless you have some sort of RYA qualification that you can use for this, I believe that some people have been quite creative with computers! --Lyn
A46.2: Re qualifications. When in UK, complete the two day level 2 powerboat course (RYA course) at about £230, a very good course that when completed gives you the International certificate of competence on motor/power boats upto 10 mtrs. The RYA offer a free Turkish translation for this qualification which is accepted by the authorities here for private boat use. Your boat & engine must be registered in Bodrum. --Gaz
A46.3: In summer 2011 I bought a motor boat, just under 5m with a 40HP engine. Following regulation changes there is no tax to pay on boats under 5m irrespective of engine size. You must still register boat and engine and re-register every year. The first year someone came to inspect my boat, but this is not done for subsequent years. There is still a requirement to have an amateur captain's licence, and there are regional centres where you can take this computer examination. No practical. Snag is, it's in Turkish and you are no longer allowed to have a translator with you. For now I'm keeping my head down. Perhaps one of those people who are "creative with computers" might be able to help me. --Lez
