Q64: Earthquake and Building Insurance

Q64: Has anyone shopped around and can now recommend an agent to supply Earthquake/building insurance?
A64.1: We haven’t done much shopping around, but we have just bought our household insurance and earthquake insurance through our contact at AXA. Their office is on the main highway at the Gümbet junction between McDonalds and Carrefour, upstairs above the new Balık (fish) restaurant (walk round the right side of the building and up the stairs). Just follow the blue AXA Insurance signs. Although the insurance lady doesn’t speak English, there is a Traffic fixer called Ridvan who speaks excellent English in the room next door. Take any old paperwork and tat will give them a good starting point. I believe we paid about 115TL for our Earthquake Insurance, and about 300TL for contents and buildings. --Editor
A64.2: We have an apartment in Yalikavak and are insured by British company Intasure, underwritten by Lloyds.  We had a powersurge in June which destroyed a lot of electrical equipment, we had receipts for all repairs and replacements and they paid up no problems at all.  Advantage is you can read and understand the policy and no language problems.  They have just informed us they also do earthquake insurance. we have £1,000,000 building, contents £7500, emergency travel £1000, public liability £5 million - premium costs us £175. -- Margaret and Ian
A64.3: Earthquake (DASK) insurance is a fixed price based on the sq metres of your property, and appears to be set officially, so non-negotiable. A copy of your TAPU is required. Until this year, we arranged household, contents and earthquake insurance with the Koc Alliance office in Oasis, (0252 317 1513). We are now using an English-based company called Intasure. (+44 (0)845 111 0670). The price for earthquake insurance is about the same as before, but we saved about £50 on the house and contents. Like all these things, you can't be sure how good they are unless/until you make a claim! --Bill
