Cost of Living in Turkey Report

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

No matter where you are in the world, people are always talking about the cost of living. For this reason, in November 2011, the Bodrum Bulletin set out to review the cost of living in Turkey. To achieve this we designed a survey of 31 questions regarding basic costs involved with life in Turkey. Our aim was simply to capture 'average' costs associated with any given expense in order to create a calculator to make people more aware of costs associated with living in Turkey.

Over the course of 5 weeks, we recorded 415 usable responses to the survey. Of course not every expense applied to every respondent, hence most of the questions averaged a usable response from 250 people - more than enough to draw some useful conclusions...

Of course, with so many responses to so many questions, there's a huge variety of ways to report the data, so we've split it into several sections;

  1. Basic summary of monthly expenses
  2. Summary of questions and the most popular responses
  3. Effect of Household size
  4. Detailed graphs for responses to each question

It should be noted here that the demographic of respondents will vary; some live in Turkey all year round, and some only spend a few months in Turkey; so when interpreting results, please bear in mind they represent only 'average' costs. Also many of you requested that we looked at regional variations of living costs, however this was not within the remit of this report, and would need a lot more respondents from all areas of Turkey to give valid results.

Basic summary of monthly expenses

The table below summarises the average monthly cost associated with each question (expense). Note: These averages exclude the "Doesn't apply/I don't know" categories.

Summary of questions and the most popular responses

In this section of the report, for each question we take a closer look at the most popular answer given, the sample sizes, and the average amount (as in the table above). Where the most common answer is "Doesn't apply/I don't know", we also list the most common answer for respondents with that item cost.

Effect of Household size

Obviously some of these expenses will differ based on the number of people in the household. To start, we looked at the breakdown of respondents that answered the survey. Unsurprisingly perhaps, 69% of respondents were answering on behalf of a household with 2 people in;

We then analysed results from all the questions, and found relevant differences only existed in a few questions; as we can see from the chart below. Understandably, the more people in the household, the greater the cost. Note that we did not receive enough responses from households with 4 or 5+ people to draw statistical conclusions.

Detailed graphs for responses to each question

Now we can take a much more detailed look at the responses given to each question, including any difference between the expense and number of people in the household. First choose a question you want to take a look at, then the image underneath will update.

Please choose which question you would like to see the results for;

How are these averages calculated?

Our survey used banded responses; e.g. rather than ask an open ended "how much do you spend on x?", we asked respondents to say which band their spending fell into; e.g. "0-10", "11-20" etc...While this keeps the survey simple, it doesn't give us a way to create any precise calculations on the data. For this reason, each band has been assigned a value which represents a mid-point in the band. For example the mid-point value for the band "11-20" would be 15.5. By using these values with the number of each respondents this allowed us to work out averages for each band, and assign an average value for any given question. See below for an example.
