This week, we take a look at Virus Scanners.

There's a whole heap of virus scanners available, some free, some paid, and some bundled with other utilities.

First, some questions to ask yourself:

  • Right now, do you have a virus-scanner icon on the toolbar, in the bottom right of your screen?
  • When you load the virus scanner interface, look for "about", "information", or "last update". Is the date under "virus definition" within the last week?
  • Is your computer running as quickly as you'd like it?

If you've answered "No" to any of those questions, it's probably time to look at a different virus scanning solution, follow this link to the website for more information...

Feature: The Sausage King"

As a regular contributor, we are pleased to introduce Greg "The Sausage King", who will provide simple but delicious recipes.

The Sausage KingGreg, also known as the Sausage King, due to his quality goodies that he supplies from his Ankara outpost, has been a chef for 27 years, working in some of the most prestigious restaurants and hotels across the world.

At the age of 16, he travelled across the French Alps, and became the first student from the UK to do his training placement in one of the best restaurants in France. From there he has gone to serve up to some of the most demanding palates.

He has now relocated to Ankara where he has carved out a decent career as the Sausage King, producing some of the best quality sausages in the Aegean region. He supplies the old favourites, such as Cumberland, as well as a range of specialties, such as chicken sausages, lamb sausages and the famous beef sausages. He also does a seafood and vegetarian range of sausages as well. More details can be found on his website: www.thesausageking.co.uk

He said: “Cookery is a little bit of science and a great deal of common sense. I want to share with readers, clear up some of the cookery myths, and over the weeks, explore and cover some of the methods used in cookery.

“What I will try and do is to create easy to make dishes allowing readers the chance to create dishes for home entertainment and good old family meals whilst not leaving them stuck in the kitchen.”

In 2009, Greg will be bringing in some fantastic new lines, including home smoked products, The Sausage King range of sauces and chutneys, home made cheeses including matured cheddar and soft bries.

Greg has also offered to field any food related questions from readers. He can be emailed at info@thesausageking.co.uk or phone 0534 650 61 54 or 0536 571 60 70.

Cassoulette, a thick casserole of beans and meat, is a hearty peasant dish that originated in the Midi-Pyrenees and Languedoc regions of France. The name comes from la cassole which is the earthenware pot traditionally used in making cassoulette. Now normally this dish contains loads of different pork cuts and duck but hey let's adapt a little.

Serves at least 8 and can be frozen

Cassoulette

Vegetables
1 Large onion
3-4 stalks of celery, Kipa for this one but not essential even use leeks if you prefer
3-4 medium size carrots
1 head of garlic

Dry & canned goods
1/2 tin of tomato purée
500- 750g of white (lingot) beans, any beans will do but a good ol' white bean works best

Meats
750g  pork sausage or beef sausage or even order your sausages from me, I like this dish with spicy chicken sausages
1 large chicken cut into 8 pieces
8 or more lamb shanks. If no shanks use bone in lamb cutlets

Herbs
Thyme to taste
Herbs de Provence to taste
Chopped parsley
Salt & Pepper

Misc
50g fresh crumbs
1 litre of chicken stock
1 large casserole dish with a lid

Ok the method and preparation - cut all the vegetables into a small dice, onions and garlic, while you are doing this brown off all the meats. Once done, brown off the vegetables and add to the meats, then add some stock to the pan and the tomato puree and bring to the boil. Stir to remove all the goodies from the bottom of the pan, at this stage whack in the bread crumbs.

In the casserole dish arrange the meats, veg and beans and sprinkle on the layers all the herbs, also a good sprinkle of salt and pepper and then add the rest of the stock so it covers everything, plonk the lid on and shove it in the oven for 2 to 3 hours on 160 degrees, told you it was easy.

Animal Poisoning on the Peninsula

Most of you will have received the Bodrum Bulletin Newsflash on Friday, where we warned of dog poisoning around the Bitez beach area. We spoke to a representative for the Bodrum Animal Welfare Association, who said that poisonings had been reported in several areas, including Bitez, Torba, and Turgutreis. Until the offenders are caught, please be extra vigilant when walking your dogs in public areas. If you have any information regarding the poisoning, please let us know ASAP.

This table shows only the cheapest single passage flights for each month as obtained from http://www.skyscanner.net. Visit SkyScanner for more flights and booking options. We will also cover how to get the best out of Skyscanner in a future issue. Flights from FlyThomasCook, ThomsonFly, and Aegean (OnurAir) are included. Note that coupon code "welcome5" can be used to get an additional £20 off return FlyThomasCook flights (however you don't seem to be able to use this code online). If you'd like to see options posted for other airports, please let us know.

Want more options?
For off-season flights, there are several options - although one of the easiest and most reliable routes is via British Airways into Izmir (Izmir is an easy 2-3hour drive from Bodrum). BA flights to Izmir run all year round, three days a week, and are about £100 each way. Remember that BA has one of the most generous baggage (and excess baggage) allowances.

For the best value, try Easyjet to Istanbul (around £30 each direction), then pickup an Istanbul flight to Bodrum (also around £30 each direction with Pegasus or OnurAir). However, be aware that there are two airports in Istanbul - be careful which you're flying in (and out) of.

Questions and AnswersQ & A

This issue we're starting another new section which we hope will be a core part of the newsletter going forward - but we need your help!

If you have a question about any aspect of life in Bodrum, let me know and I'll post it to this section as an open question. But here's the important bit - we need your help to answer the open questions; so please don't be embarrassed - send us your answers.

To keep this section relatively short, I'll archive the questions to the website, and keep them there for us all to view.

To get us started, here are some open questions, together with some already answered ones...

Q1: I've just moved here and my Turkish neighbour brought me over a plate of food. My friend said I can't give her back the plate empty as it's considered rude, and now I have to cook something for her. Is this true?
A1: The polite thing to do is to return the plate with something on it you have cooked, though there's no rush to do this. You can also return it with something you've bought, such as cake, but be careful this can end up with the plate going backwards and forwards indefinitely. Maybe better just to hand it back empty!

Q2: How do I tell the Dolmus I want to get off?
A2: Simply "Inecek Var" (IN-A-JEK VAR), or "Müsait bir yerde" (MOO-SITE BEER YER-DE).

Q3. I was in Konacik the other day and tried to catch a dolmus back to Bodrum but none of them would stop. Why is this?
A3. As far as I understand within the Konacik area only a Konacik Belideye dolmus can pick you up, though any dolmus can drop you off. Walk down to the traffic lights at the top of the hill to Bodrum then you can get on any dolmus.

Q4: Does anyone know where in Bodrum I can get digital photos printed onto large canvases?
A4: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q5. I seem to be paying very high sitesi fees compared to all my friends even though we live on similar size sites with the same facilities. How can I go about getting my fees reduced?
A5: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q6. Does anyone know the best way to clean a marble work surface?
A6: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q7. Where can I get a CR2025 coin battery? (for kitchen scales)
A7: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

New Currency - Don't forget that as of the 1st January, 2009, the "New Turkish Lira", or "Yeni Türk Lirası", ceases to be new any more, and becomes just "Turkish Lira," or "Türk Lirası". New bank notes will be in circulation, but old notes will continue to be valid until the end of the year (although still redeemable at branches of the Central Bank until 2019!).

Traffic accident form - Have you got your copy of the English-Turkish traffic accident form? If not, download it HERE now.

Bank Details - Did you know that as a money laundering preventative, your Turkish bank account is in danger of being frozen if you do not confirm your details with your bank before June 2009? Make sure you pop in with your bank book, and some official ID (e.g. passport).

Electricity Price Rises - with the recent January electricity price rises, if you're on a newer meter which allows for three different rates, it's worth remembering the bands:

Time
Rate
Cost
6am to 5pm Daytime (Gündüz) 14kr/kWh
5pm to 10pm Peak (Puant) 24kr/kWh
10pm to 6am Night (Gece) 6kr/kWh

Vehicle Tax - Vehicle tax is due again, for details of 2009 pricing, and details on how much your renewal will be, please go to 2009 Vehicle Tax Calculator, the newer your vehicle, and the bigger the engine the more you'll pay. Payment is simple, either take your blue document folder to your bank or the tax office and let them do the work, or most banks will let you pay it online.
