Dear Reader,

Welcome to the fifth issue from soggy Bodrum. Of course, an issue won't be complete without a new section or two, so without any delay, let's look at the "What's New" and "Discounts" sections.

The "What's New" section is a place for anything that's new on the Peninsula - whether it's somewhere to eat, shop or see, let us know about it and we'll report it here.

We hope you'll enjoy the Discounts section. Put simply, it's a list of businesses which have agreed to give Bodrum Bulletin readers a discount. All businesses are welcome, so if you know of a business which would like to be listed in each issue, let us know so everyone can enjoy it!

As always, don't forget that we welcome your comments and suggestions for improvements, and if you have something to contribute, don't be shy - let us know.

Spyware, Malware and other Nasties

OK, so the next stop on our quest for a clean and tidy PC is handling all those 'nasties' with scary names... spyware, adware, malware, trojans, hijackers, keyloggers, spybots, trackware, worms, and dialers.

Depending on your virus and security packages, the chances are that you won't be fully protected from all of these, so don't assume you're safe just because you have a virus scanner - these nasties are (usually) not considered as Viruses.

There are lots of different types of spyware protection, but I'm going to talk you through one of the best free programs out - Spybot Search and Destroy. It's a 'passive' application that you are required to run manually when you want - so it won't take up any system resources, won't slow your PC down, and won't conflict with anything you already have installed. So you're safe to follow this guide no matter what software you have.

What's New?

Welcome to the What's New section. Here's where you tell us what's new on or around the peninsula - a new restaurant, cafe or bar perhaps, or a new shop, attraction, or bus route - anything!

  • Halikarnas Bird Park
Open for a couple of weeks now, this Konacık based attraction has all kinds of birds from around the world. Read more about it HERE. Have you visited? Recommend it now!

  • Pasta Evi
There's a new coffee & cake shop called "Pasta Evi" open in Atatürk St. just off the junction with the Bodrum High St.

  • Allaturca Beach Club Restaurant and Cafe Bar
This Restaurant and Bar opened at the beginning of February at the end of the Bodrum Marina car park. The cuisine is between Turkish & Ottoman and Mediterranean. They also have live music nights, including Friday when Gülderen Erdogmus performs with the group "Evergreen". The car park is free but you need to get a ticket stamped by the Allaturca staff. Visit their website HERE.

  • Gümbet Biological Waste Water Treatment Plant
Ok, perhaps not the most exciting "New" item, but many of you will be pleased to hear that after 14 long years, the treatment plant has finally been finished - hopefully the beaches on the South of the peninsula will benefit hugely from this. Read more HERE.

If you know of anything new on the peninsula, let us know and we'll help spread the word.

Feature: A Touch of Bodrum in Montreal

This issues feature comes from Cecilia Sev, a Canadian with a house in Turgutreis.

I would never have known about the Turkish Peace Garden in Montreal had it not been for a chance encounter with Okan Ozsoy at the Vivaldi Ceramic Gallery in Bodrum last winter.

We returned to Canada last spring determined to visit the Gardens on our next trip to Montreal. Montreal is just a two hour drive from our home in Ottawa and one of our favourite cities. The Peace Garden is located in the Montreal Botanical Gardens.

Turkish Peace Garden

It is a gift from the Turkish community in Quebec, Canada  and the Iznik Foundation in Turkey. This beautiful garden  is small, centered by a fountain and surrounded by flower beds which, each spring, are full of that glorious Turkish motif, the tulip. The tulip motif is reinforced with great effect, again and again in the nine low walls and nine pillars decorated in brilliant and colourful Iznik tiles.  And these tiles were selected, arranged and produced in panels  by none other than Okan Ozsoy of the Vivaldi Gallery right here in Bodrum.

Now when I am in Canada I can always find a touch of Bodrum in Montreal.

Our first recipe this week comes from "The Torba Cook", and is for a delicious Lemon Curd

Quick Lemon Curd - ideal for all the cheap lemons!

60gm butter ( unsalted is best)
130 gm sugar
Zest and juice of 2 lemons
2 eggs beaten.

Put all the ingredients except the eggs, into a heavy bottomed saucepan over a low heat. Stir until the butter has melted and the sugar dissolved. Add the beaten eggs and STIR CONTINUALLY until it thickens. If you don't it will end up scrambled! It should take about 7-10 minutes. Once thick pour into a sterilised jar and keep in the fridge. If you are anxious about making it directly over the heat try it first in a basin over a pan of simmering water. This is the 'proper' way but takes longer.

French Onion Soup
from The Sausage King

Well I have started to notice a nip in the air; it definitely seems to be getting colder. So here is one of my favourite dishes, very quick very simple and totally delicious French Onion Soup.

4 Portions of gratinated French onion soup

Ingredients
4 medium sized onions
2 pints beef stock or a couple of beef cubes
25 grams flour
Any scraps of cheese about 150 to 200 grams
4 slices of bread or enough to cover the tops of 4 soup bowls
Salt and pepper to season.

Preparation
Peel and cut the onions in half remove the root and slice finely.
Toast the bread on both sides.
Grate the cheese
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees

Method
Now this bit is gonna sound a little crazy but here goes... Chuck the sliced onion into a pan and cook without butter and no oil, now I know you are thinking - "but they will burn", no they won't as long as you keep on stirring, they will first soften then they will start going brown and eventually caramelise. The onions contain natural sugars, so let’s do this as natural as possible, and you'll get a rich dark colour, without using gravy browning - just the browning of the onions.

By now you should have a stodgy mixture of dark brown onions in the bottom of your pan. Now add the flour and mix in all the lumps and add the beef stock, bring to the boil and you will notice that it has thickened the soup, now add seasoning to your taste. Ok we are on the final stretch, ¾ fill your soup tureens or bowls with the soup and then place your toasted bread and grated cheese on top, pop in the oven till the cheese has melted and bubbling about ten minutes, voila, serve it piping hot and you have a wonderful winter warmer.

Just one 'bumper' crossword this week with household items - a bit of a mix in here - but an excellent one for anyone with a new house! As always, the clue is a Turkish word, the answer is the translated word into English. For example, if the clue is "Merhaba", the answer is "Hello".

Note that the crosswords are designed to be filled in online, but each page has a link to print versions if you prefer a printed version. Have fun!

Migros Online Shopping - Migros now offers virtually free delivery to Bodrum homes

Did you know that Migros now offers free home delivery around the peninsula if you order online and spend more than 75TL? And even if your order is above the minimum 20TL but below 75TL the delivery charge is just 1.50TL.

The service area covers the whole peninsula and as far out as Güllük. There are four delivery slots per day including evenings 7.30 – 10pm and you can even pay at the door with your credit card or by cash if you prefer.

For full details visit www.sanalmarket.com.tr Click on 'English version' from the home page and then select Migros Virtual Market from the menu on the left hand side. The website works just like Tesco or Waitrose etc. in the UK by selecting items for a shopping basket. It also offers a wider range of electronic and other non-food lines.

To give you a recommendation from first hand, two of our readers in Yalıkavak were amazed last week when they placed an order for a printer at 6pm and found that there was a delivery slot available the same evening. Ten minutes later an email confirmation arrived, five minutes after that a text message. At 6.20pm the Bodrum shop rang asking for directions to the house, and at 6.55pm they were at the door in the pouring rain with the goods and credit card PIN reader in hand. By 7.30pm it was unpacked and ready to print. Beat that! Now if only Kipa would follow suit....
