    Usui Method of Natural Healing

This is a three day workshop designed to lead beginners to become energy workers able to do very effective full body treatments on themselves or others.

Reiki is a gentle, very simple natural hands-on healing method. It rebalances the body and the psyche on all levels. Reiki makes us feel connected to the greater Universe outside of our isolated selves. We feel serene, energised and whole and can convey all this to people and animals we treat.
We are the creators of our own health. To learn Reiki makes a material contribution to the willingness to take responsibility for one's healing and well-being, giving ourselves a simple yet powerful way of doing so..

Before moving home to Turkey last year, Elif Köksal worked for several years as the Reiki teacher of the famous Himalayan Buddhist Meditation Center in Kathmandu, Nepal. She has taught Reiki in several countries to people from almost forty nationalities! She is a Cranio Sacral Therapist and also holds a Body-Mind Therapy diploma from India.

Bodrum Investment Group

Are falling interest rates hurting you?

Until recently, the high deposit rates in Turkey meant there was little point in considering other forms of investment. However, many of us ex-pats are now being adversely affected by the unprecedented falls in Turkish interest rates. You may have been wondering what, if anything, you can do about your falling income: if so, perhaps you would be interested in meeting up with other folks to discuss other investment options ?

The Bodrum Investment Group (BIG) aims to meet regularly (fortnightly or monthly) to share information, ideas, tips and experiences about different types of investment available to those of us living in Bodrum. This may include:

  • Interest rates – Central bank policy, projections, time/e-deposits, different banks
  • Foreign exchange
  • Stock markets – securities, commodities, dividends
  • On-line FOREX and share trading
  • Spread betting
  • Internet information sources
  • Property – sales, rental returns, tax issues
  • Tax efficient savings
  • Analysing financial data – charts, company returns, inflation, government statistics

Please note that the purpose of the group is NOT to provide professional finance advice. Neither is it an Investment Club seeking funds from participants for collective investments.

If you think that you might be interested in joining such a discussion group over coffee, then please email me with any times of the week that you would NOT be able to meet.

Creativity Workshop

Come join me in an afternoon of art devoted to opening up new perspectives that can add depth to our work and our lives. This two-and-a-half hour art workshop will have two focal points: on the one hand, we will concentrate on “realistic” drawing – in other words, developing our perceptual skills and strengthening our eye-hand coordination; on the other hand, we will work on stretching our imaginations – reaching into the abstract and symbolic, playing with artistic media to develop our personal techniques of expression. The Workshop is designed to encourage "complete beginners", while also being of benefit to more experienced visual artists looking for new influences/directions. We will meet at Bettina’s Atölye in Bodrum on Wednesday afternoons from 13:30 to 16:00. The fee for this 4-week workshop (25 March-15 April) is 80TL.

After a request, this week we're going to take a quick look at how you can manage your Turkcell phone on-line - whether you are in the UK, or in Turkey.

Did you know that you could access your account online and do all this?:

Also, remember the following codes which can be entered straight into your phone:

5 Minute Chocolate Mug Cake - submitted by Audrey

4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
A small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.

Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts (high). The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed! Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.

EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous). And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world? Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night!

You are going to print this out straight away, aren't you?

Onur Air (Aegean Flight) Cancellations - As is coming a tradition, Onur have cancelled some flights.... this time it's flights between Birmingham and Bodrum during June. If you're affected, and want to keep similar dates, you have a couple of choices thanks to Thomson and FlyThomasCook. See the SkyScanner page HERE for your June options which start from about £230 return.

Bodrum-Istanbul Ferry - We're waiting for confirmation, but it looks as if the Denizline Bodrum-Istanbul ferry won't be running in 2009. But don't forget that you can pick up a Pegasus flight between Bodrum and Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport from around £40 return, just remember that it's the airport which is an hour or so from the centre of Istanbul.

Questions and AnswersQ & A

If you have a question about any aspect of life in Bodrum, let us know and we'll post it to this section as an open question. But here's the important bit - we need your help to answer the open questions; so please don't be embarrassed - send us your questions, and answers.

New Questions:

Q24: We are looking to get married in Bodrum and are looking for somewhere small, romantic and private with a view, for a ceremony and meal for around 30 people. Does anyone have any suggestions or know of any 'hidden gems' around Bodrum that would suit - we're open to all ideas and suggestions, but nothing too expensive!
A24: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

New Answers:

Q23: Does anyone know if a flat panel TV purchased in Turkey will work in UK with terrestrial TV? I know the old style English TV's are not compatible with the Turkish TV signal but maybe things are different in the digital age?
A23: To answer this question in sound technical terms, I would need to know the exact technical specifications of your TV. If a flat screen TV (either LCD or plasma) purchased in Turkey would be used in the UK without a receiver (either cable or satellite) box, then, the following should be kept in mind: Both countries use the PAL (phase alternating line) colour encoding system (625 lines and 25 frames per second) and the same voltage (220 volts 50Hz) and as Dave suggested, an adaptor will be needed for the plug itself ;however, similarities end there. The differences are in the frequency range of the analogue VHF and UHF signals. The TV made in Turkey (I assume without seeing the specs) will have 5.0 MHz frequency band (as Turkey operates in the PAL B and G category), whereas the TV stations in the UK conform to the PAL I standard and broadcast in 5.5 MHz frequency band. Now, the puzzling question then is whether such a small difference would cause any problems. My guess is that it would and picture flicker may result. Moreover, if the audio carrier frequencies are different (although both use FM), then there will be "signal distortion" on the TV side, producing a very bad quality of sound. Even if the Turkish TV is used with a receiver box (commonly referred to as a "set-top box", the results would be disappointing because the box cannot provide all the decoding the TV might be missing. The handshake has to be complete between the source (the broadcaster), the service provider (here we have subscribed to Digiturk service and use their set-top box which decodes all incoming signals for the TV) and the TV itself. Besides, once we begin to talk about cable or satellite transmission, then we are in the "digital" world which has its own complexities as well. -- Muharrem Sev

Q22: Can anyone recommend a health insurance company for UK ex pats.
A22.1: Some are Bupa International, Exeter Friendly, Vanbreda International. -- Deniz (Özel Bodrum Hastanesi)
A22.2: There many Turkish companies which offer Insurance, a lot of Ex-pats are with AXA and Yapi Kredi.
A22.3: I can't "recommend" a company but I have just taken out insurance with a worldwide insurance company with offices in the UK where all my dealings were conducted. They were very competitive, however I have only just taken out so cant comment on their "after sales" service as yet. The company is called Healthcare International (HCI) and once taken out it covers the person for illness/injury anywhere in the world, with some extras for the USA.  Obviously there are various levels of insurance to suit different needs and pockets. -- Carol Edwards

Q21: Does anyone know how the Gümbet Belediyesi Sport Centre works? Is there a time table for the pool opening hours? how much is it to swim or can you buy a monthly pass etc...? Is there anyone there that speaks English there who is helpful?
A21: Bodrum Sports Centre Swimming Pool in Gümbet is available to use by adults on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays either at 7pm to 8 pm or 8pm to 9 pm. There is only monthly pass available for 100TL. You can contact the head trainer Onur, he is at the pool everyday from 5pm to 7 pm he does not speak much English but you may try to phone him as well (0532 579 20 83), there is always somebody at the pool amongst parents who speak English at the hours above. -- Asli Mutlu

Q20: I am diabetic and would like to spend more time at our villa this year. In the UK I can only get my insulin on a monthly basis due to the shelf life. Is there any where I can get insulin in the Bodrum area, other than flying home every month to pick up supplies?
A20.1: I presume you are using insulin injections. Simply tell the name of your medicine (e.g. Lantus, Novorapid) to any pharmacy over here, and they will be able to help. If you are using pills, they may not be available under the same name; I would suggest that you consult a doctor to be sure - it's likely it's available here under another name, or will have a direct equivalent. In Özel Bodrum hospital there is an endocrinologist who speaks English, if you should need any assistance. -- Deniz (Özel Bodrum Hastanesi)
A20.2: Simply call the Universal Hospital and ask for Becky, who will be able to help. -- Stephanie
A20.3: I have been Diabetic for over 35 years and also have a villa (Yalikavak) which means I'm there quite often. Not sure what insulin you use but sure that you are mistaken about shelf life of the product. All human insulin's have a good shelf life (up to 3 years) and only need to be kept cool in the fridge, not freezer, to maintain stability. All the insulin's we use in the UK are available in Turkey, which has a very good pharmacy network. All you need to do is talk to the pharmacist and explain that you need the insulin for you, take the old packaging. Everything else to do with Diabetes is available too, just ask. Check out some of the herbal remedies available, many Turkish people seem to know a lot more about this condition than we do in many cases. -- Alec Renwick

Q17: Our TAPU (title deeds), has the "Kat Irtifaki" box ticked. Can anyone tell me what this means, what the implications are, and if applicable - how to change this; we believe we have a copy of the habitation certificate.
A17.1: A Kat Irtifak tapu is based on owning a share of the overall land on which the houses are built -  after the building has been completed to the required standard and the "iskan" granted then you can apply for Kat Mulkiyet tapu status which shows shared ownership of land PLUS a specified building on that land.  There is a fine if this procedure from KI to KM is not done in the correct amount of time and the original plans may have to be redrawn if you are out of the time limit. The application is made generally by the complex as a whole (the law says one house can apply but the tapu office will soon send you packing!) and requires various work, photographs of every side of each houses, proof of everyone having their DASK insurance etc., a "harita muhendis" plan.  The procedure needs to be instigated by your Yonetim Kurulu - Residents Committee and generally all house owners will be asked for additional payments to complete this project. Once you have Kat Mulkiyet status you will come under the Kat Mulkiyet laws. I can recommend someone who does this work for a reasonable charge. -- Jane Baxter

Q14: I have a Panasonic CD player which I bought over from the UK. Since I transported it a 'click' has developed when it plays CDs. Does anyone know where I can get this looked at or fixed?
A14:
Panasonic are good at honouring guarantees I have discovered. If they cannot fix here they will send it to their service place in Istanbul. They are in the same block as Digiturk next to HSBC in Bodrum (map). -- Priscilla

Unanswered Questions:
Note: to help keep this section short, starting next issue I'll list some of the older unanswered questions on the website only.

Q24: I have heard that if you hold a residence permit you can obtain treatment and consultations at state (devlet) hospitals and clinics the same as citizens (albeit for a considerably cheaper fee), does anybody have any info on this at all.
A24: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q19: Has anyone discovered any materials in Bodrum suitable for improving the sound proofing through a shared block partition wall?
A19: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!
