Dear Reader,

Welcome to issue 10, I can't believe we made it! 10 issues in, we thought it was time to update the demographics graphs which were first published way back in issue #003, when we only had a measly 399 subscribers.

Location-wise, Yalıkavak still has the lions-share of subscribers - 151 of you. Looking at age, there are as many readers aged between 51 and 55 as there are who are under 40. Make of that what you will! To view the demographics in more detail, please click HERE.

Securing your data forever - Backups

When was the last time you took a backup of your data?

At some point or other we've all lost information - whether it's a document, photos, old emails, or your favourite joke video - it's happened to us all. So why do so few of us actually have a backup routine?

Fortunately backups have come a long way recently, from the old days of floppy discs, to tapes, to CDs, to DVDs, to external hard drives, the process is basically the same - duplicate your data in another (ideally remote) location.

There's a whole host of backup tools, software and devices available, but for the purpose of this article I'll show you the easiest, most automated, and most reliable and secure methods that are available to all of you with an internet connection. Best of all, it is free, and very simple to setup (once you've done the initial install and backup you never need to touch it again!).

If you haven't followed any of my other articles, you may want to start with this one - before you lose that photo of your grandson forever!

Ephesus & Pamukkale by Car
Ephesus In the last week of April this year, I had some friends visiting from England who wanted to see both Ephesus ('Efes') & Pamukkale during their stay. After some consideration we decided not to take one of the many tours offered from Bodrum (although they do seem to be good value), and chose instead to do it by ourselves. Although I cannot directly compare my experience to those of a tour, I wanted to share with people how easily it can be done independently, so long as you do your research before you go.

Firstly, we booked our hotel in Pamukkale the evening before we left - we had been recommended the family-run Venüs Hotel, by some friends that stayed there a few weeks previously. On Friday morning we left our house in Yalıkavak a little after 8am, with the car fully stocked with supplies for the journey. The route to Selçuk (and Efes) was straightforward, and took us past some lovely scenery, in particular Bafa Lake, where we stopped for some photos.

We reached Selçuk at 11am and found Efes is very well signposted. We parked in the South car park which is free. We had been advised that someone would offer us a free shuttle from here which would take us to the other end of the site, so we could walk through ending back at our car, instead of walking both directions. As we were all young and healthy and the weather was so pleasant we declined the offer, but did hear that it was via a carpet or leather factory and could take almost an hour! We enquired about the cost of hiring a guide and were told...... Click to continue reading and for more photos.

Recipe: Vegetable Rice Cake

Serves 6

Ingredients:

  • 325g rice (preferably Arborio but any starchy rice will be fine)
  • 5 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 large carrot, grated
  • 1 large courgette, grated
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 150g strong flavoured cheese, grated
  • 4 tbsp cream
  • 2 tbsp chopped rosemary
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg

    For the Sauce
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 100g cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 150ml tomato passata
  • 100ml vegetable stock
  • 1 tbsp wine vinegar
  • a handful of fresh basil leaves, roughly torn

Method:

1. Heat oven to 180°C. Oil a 20cm spring-form tin. Cook the rice in boiling water for about 8 mins, then drain.

2. Heat 2 tbsp of the oil in a frying pan, then fry the onions, carrots and courgettes for 5 mins. Mix in a bowl together with the rice, garlic and remaining olive oil, then leave to cool slightly for about 30 mins.

3. Add the eggs, cheese, cream, rosemary, nutmeg, and seasoning, then put into the tin. Level the surface, then bake for about 25 mins until the cake is golden and slightly crisp.

4. To make the sauce, heat the oil in a pan, add the tomatoes, then fry until lightly coloured. Add the passata, stock, vinegar, basil and seasoning, then gently heat.

5. Carefully turn the cake out onto a warmed serving plate. Serve, cut into wedges with the sauce and garnished with basil.

Can be eaten piping hot from the oven or chilled for a picnic, with a crunchy salad.

Owing to a very bad back condition I am no longer able to look after my dog - she was originally a street dog which I rescued 4 years ago.

She is a lovely girl - neutered etc - but strong!

Will live outside in kennel or inside a home - fully house trained.

If anyone could help I would be willing to supply her food, flea drops and worming tablets.

Questions and AnswersQ & A

If you have a question about any aspect of life in Bodrum, let us know and we'll post it to this section as an open question. But here's the important bit - we need your help to answer the open questions; so please don't be embarrassed - send us your questions, and answers.

New Questions:

Q36: We have a house in Yalikavak, and have a little boy who is a year and a half old. We would like to know, is there anywhere we can go as a family to meet similar people?
A36:
Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!
EDITOR: Keep a close eye on the events section; there's the Mother and Toddler group, the Bitez Children's library, and this Saturday, the toy sale at Patika Nursery School in Ortakent. I'm sure you'd be warmly welcomed at these, and would meet many similar people.

Q35: Where can I get my knives sharpened?
A35: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q34: Where can I purchase Buck Wheat pillows in Bodrum?
A34: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q33: Can anyone advise where you can buy mosquito nets for over beds in the Bodrum area and how much they cost?
A33: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

New Answers:

Q32: Does anyone know a English speaking yoga teacher who will make home visits or visits to developments?
A32: Try Melek, on 0536 344 29 74, or melekhakyemez@hotmail.com. --Tomurcuk
A32: Something to add? let us know!

Q29: I understand that April and May are the start of the tick and flea season. There are a bewildering number of treatments available over here - from flea drops by Frontline SpotOn and SpotLine, to many types of (dog) collars in different colours and from 10TL to 70TL. Does anyone have any advice on what works the best, or any money-saving tips?
A29.1:
I find the "Paraband" (by Intervet) flea and tick collars to be really effective.  They really do seem to protect for 6 months as it says on the package, and it also claims they protect against the type of fly that carries Lieshmaniasis.  I think vets are currently selling them for about 35TL.  I used to use Frontline- either spot treatment or spray bottle.  It is also good, but works out more expensive since each application lasts roughly 2 months. --Jayne
A29.2: I have found that fleas are rarely a problem, but ticks are nasty little things that are not only unsightly but disease carriers. I always use drops at this time of year, either Frontline or there is a Turkish equivalent which seems to work just as well. The drops will kill off ticks for around a month and fleas for two months. I would recommend checking prices with a few different vets as they do vary, and also check the weight of the dog and ensure you are given the right strength. The only flea collars that really work are quite expensive, again from vets, the cheaper versions available in supermarkets are a waste of time and money. I brought some Frontline combo spot-on back from the UK recently which worked out at £5.53 per pipette for a 10 – 20kg dog. --Peter Fearnley
A29: Something to add? let us know!

Q27: Do we need to make a Turkish will if we live in Turkey all the time or does our English will cover our assets here?
A27.1: Turkish wills, are not worth the paper they are printed on. They do not stand up in court. My husband, a dual national died last year, his Turkish will left everything to me. Under Turkish law, children inherit part of their parents estate and the will is totally disregarded. This law also applies to children from previous marriages, so people on their second marriage who don't have children, please take note. My 9 year old even has a share of my car!!! I urge all of you who own property here in Turkey, to sign the petition HERE for the right of the last will and testament to be recognized and upheld. --Karen
A27.2: I have been advised that an English Will does not cover anything in Turkey and that it is advisable to take out a Will in Turkey for all assets here.  That said, I have had differing views on whether, despite paying a lot of money for such a Will, the Turkish legislation will still prevail which tends to make a nonsense in making the Will.  If you get any differing advice I would be interested to hear it. -- Carol
A27: Something to add? let us know!

Q13: Has anyone found a way to get from Izmir airport to the bus station (and vice versa) without using a taxi?
A13.1: There is a now a bus which runs from Izmir airport to the bus station and vice versa, as for how often - I don't know --Martin
A13.2: There is a Havas bus which runs from Izmir Airport to the bus station for 10TL. The only problem is that it doesn't seem to have a timetable and the driver couldn't give us any information although the person with me was Turkish and asked all the questions. An Atlas Jet and Pegasus flight had arrived at the same time so the bus had enough travelers to fill the bus. --Susan
A13.3: For a cheap transfer that's less hassle, I have used A2B transfers. Although they are a transfer company they are extremely reliable, very very cheap (less than £25 per person), and absolutely fantastic. Although they primarily offer a shared service, they take you door to door and pick you up from wherever you want picking up.  I really can’t praise them enough. --Frances
A13: Something to add? let us know!
