A Hidden Village Near Bodrum

Our feature this week comes from reader Audrey, who is a Bodrum resident and has great memories of the old days of Bodrum. There have been a lot of changes over the years, and there are still many hidden gems to be found across the peninsula. Here she recalls one of them which she stumbled across several years ago.

I first discovered this hidden hamlet near our Bodrum home about six years ago. Taking a walk off the beach I was trying to find an old friend’s house that we used to visit some 25 years ago.  I turned into a sunken lane shadowed by tall trees, which reminded me of the old way to the place I was seeking.  I did not find the house, but I stumbled on something remarkable!

I walked for about an hour in a lost world.  The lane was the connection between some fifteen to twenty old Bodrum stone houses, now uninhabited. Each dwelling set in the fields and orchards that used to support the folk who lived there up to twenty years ago.  The houses, once whitewashed are now the gray of the original stones which made them seem as if they were not built, but had always been there as the stones of the fields. The greenness surrounding the dwellings represents the very life of the people who lived there, and I felt I had gone back into a time 30 years ago when we first started to come to this area. Except there were no people. Or so I thought...

One or two fields were tended and here and there evidence of hoeing between citrus trees, the earth open and rich beneath them.  I saw a man in one of the gardens, who looked at me in surprise, no doubt not expecting to see anyone from the outside world!  I did indeed feel like an intruder from another time.  Before he could question me, I asked him if this were his house and garden.  It was indeed he said, the house in which he had been born, but now the family came here only to look after the orchard and tend a few vegetables. They had a new house in an upper and more modern village nearby. I said that I loved the old stone houses, and would he ever think of selling his.  His face softened as he said he would never entertain the idea.  He liked to come here to work in the orchards on weekends with his family, and stay in the crumbling old stone house. It was home.

I walked for about an hour following the lane that was just wide enough for a cart, or as I discovered by seeing wheel marks, a car. The tall trees and hedges on each side were put there many years ago to protect the citrus from the wind. Usually poplars were used for this, and then tall reeds to fill in the gaps. It was difficult to realize that this wonderful place was some few hundred yards from the sea one way....... Click HERE to continue reading...

Recipe: Bean Hotpot

Serves 4-6

This recipe works great with canned beans and tomatoes and is quick and simple to prepare with these. But you could use dried beans and fresh tomatoes instead (which are the cheaper options in Turkey!).

To use dried beans, the rule of thumb is to rinse and sort discarding any stones, then soak the beans in water for about 8 hours (to reduce the cooking time). Next rinse and drain again before boiling in fresh water for anything up to 2 hours, or until they are soft - the time varies depending on which beans you use, and the texture you prefer. Once you have done this preparation you can add them to any sauces, and serve them hot or cold.

For the Bean Hotpot use approximately 200g of dried beans in total (which will triple in volume once cooked). You need to have the beans cooked before adding them at step 3. If you use fresh tomatoes in this recipe, you can skin them first then roughly chop them, and you may like to add some 'domates salçası' to help thicken the sauce up a bit.

Leftovers (if you have any!) are delicious the next day served cold with some salad or in a tortilla wrap.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 onions, thickly sliced
  • 1 medium carrot, cut into thin sticks
  • 1 red pepper, thickly sliced
  • 1 tbsp ground coriander
  • 1 tbsp ground cumin
  • 400g chopped tomatoes
  • 300ml hot vegetable stock
  • 600g mixed beans (e.g. cannellini, fava, red beans)
  • 1 lemon, thickly sliced
  • 20g fresh coriander

Method:

  1. Heat the oil in a large pan, and cook the onions and carrots over a moderate heat until they are softened, about 7-10 minutes.
  2. Add the red pepper, ground coriander and ground cumin, then cook for a further minute.
  3. Pour in the tomatoes, stock, beans and lemon, then cook gently for 10 minutes.
  4. Stir in the coriander and remove the lemon pieces. Season to taste and serve with rice, couscous, crusty bread, or jacket potato.

Paying your Electric Bills automatically from your Turkish Bank
Some of you will have noticed that in the Muğla region, Tedaş have now been semi-privatised, and are now Aydem. One of the most important changes is that billing is now monthly (rather than every 2 months). Aydem are also a lot more aggressive towards late payments of electric bills, and will cut off electricity once a bill is just one month overdue. To prevent this, and for a more efficient way to pay, simply take any electric bill to your Turkish bank and they will set up an automatic monthly payment, and you'll never have to worry about paying a bill again. Please consider this - especially if you do not live in your house all year round. It takes minutes and really is easy.

Paying your Phone Bills automatically from your Turkish Bank
As with your electric bill, if you'd like to set up an automatic monthly payment for your phone or internet service, simply take any bill to your Turkish bank who will setup an automatic monthly payment for you.
