Dear Reader,

Welcome to issue 12. This issue, we've got two reader submitted features for you. First, a great article by Ceylan, a Bodrum and Mazı resident for several years, and a keen gardener shares with us the delights and joys of spring in and around Bodrum.

Then Traveller follows up our article from issue #010 on Ephesus & Pamukkale, and takes us further exploring the Kırmızı Su Bahçesi in Karahayıt, and then onto Aphrodisias, and gives us some great hints and tips on how to get the most out of the tour.

Remember that we're always looking for your articles, so if you have something you'd like to share, please don't be shy, and send it through to us.

Emotions (and Pains + Ailments) Anonymous

Jungle Jim

So maybe you have heard of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and maybe you haven't. What EFT is is a simple “tapping” technique that is turning out to be one of the quickest easiest least “wear and tear ways of getting rid of emotional trauma, physical pain, fears, phobias, addictions and everything in between.

You can get an EFT session from a qualified practitioner like Melek the yoga instructor in Bodrum who you may already know, or myself or somebody else, or once you learn it you can apply it to yourself.

I do a great (so they say) job applying EFT to others, but I’m personally not as successful when I apply it to myself. (Your results may differ).

Anyway, it dawned on me today that I really enjoy giving EFT sessions, that there are probably dozens of EFT practitioners on the Bodrum Peninsula in the summer, and that I would enjoy teaching new folks how to do EFT and sharing with others who are already benefiting from EFT.

I also happen to have the full set of Gary Craig’s EFT DVDs – the Foundation, Intermediate and Honours that you can buy at www.emofree.com for $540 if bought separately or $270 if bought as a group. Now Gary is a very smart and generous man – he specifically allows the original purchaser of the DVDs to give away up to one hundred copies of the DVDs. I can share mine with 99 more people.

What I would like to propose is sort of an “EFT Circle” where we get together for EFT training and sharing. My goal is to help others help themselves as well as to help myself by creating a network of people I could contact if I get “stuck” when working on myself. Sometimes all you need is that outside perspective to allow you to get to the root of a problem.

This is a no cost proposition. I’m not making money on this “EFT Circle”; this is about sharing the wealth.

Interested in making new friends and losing old pains? Give me a call or email me and I will coordinate things. I am located in Turgutreis, but this can happen wherever it is most convenient for everyone. I am envisioning this to be a weekly or biweekly happening.

The Magical Reality of Spring

Our first feature this issue comes from reader Ceylan, who shares with us the wonders of Spring around Bodrum.

The spring in the region is almost over but thanks to longer than usual rainy (and plenty of it) winter in & around Bodrum this year the spring is extended into May which is almost over and its magical surprises continues for nature and garden/ing lovers, such as myself.  While driving down from Istanbul last week and thoroughly enjoying the nature all along the Aegean route down to Mazı where I live now I have calculated that I have been visiting and/or living in & around Bodrum since 1971 which brings it to 38 years! It seems like I have been living here all my life or as if almost born here and the dramatic change that took place meanwhile is beyond the subject of this article: I am to write about nature & my garden.

Mazı Garden  Mazı Garden   Mazı Garden

I had my first garden in the region in 1984 which I left behind in 2006 sadly... Leaving behind a garden feels almost like leaving a lover or a pet. But as always there is the excitement of the new which if not compensates it is always exciting to start a garden from scratch. I have started this new garden in Mazı in 2004. To be precise I have planted my first tree on January 1st, 2004 which was a tiny pomegranate tree given by two dear friends whom one of them actually took the trouble of climbing hills and jumping over bushes and walls on a chilly and rainy day to plant it together with me.

Rough safari walks to reach the land never stopped me from continuing to plant and carry water by bottles until finally in April 2004 I have obtained the permission from the court to open a road after which I got carried away:  though I am in love with what I did I definitely believe I over did it, as usual. Only naturally I have started with cedar trees along the northern border to control the fierce north wind that did not give any chance to grow anything but olive trees which there were already about 60 of them when I first bought the land, young and well established to which I added some more -this is part of the house ritual: Whenever friends come to stay for a night or two we.... Aphrodisias and More

Our second feature is from "Traveller", and follows up our article a couple of weeks ago on Ephesus & Pamukkale by Car.

Following a recent article in the Bodrum Bulletin about driving to Ephesus and Pamukkale by car, we decided to do the same trip. We stayed in the same hotel (the excellent Venus Hotel) and spent the morning exploring Pamukkale and ancient Hierapolis. After visiting Pamukkale we returned to the village and then drove along the base of the escarpment to Karahayıt, a very Turkish thermal resort town with many new hotels springing up, to visit the kırmızı su bahçesi (red water garden) where warm water bubbles out of iron-rich red-stained rock. It is a peaceful garden setting, with beds full of roses and ornamental pomegranate trees. There were small pools here suitable for paddling, a number of souvenir shops, and mud baths where massage was also available. Not a bathing suit in sight here. Entrance is free. Two camels were providing “taxi rides” and therefore photo opportunities for the children. There was quite a large covered refreshment area and a notice on the gate warns that alcoholic drinks are not available. The main road through the town was being re-surfaced so traffic was diverted into a rough and ready one-way system. After you enter the town follow the signs towards the town centre. There is a large red coloured fountain formed by mineral deposits. Follow the road straight ahead but which passes to the left of this. The kirmizi su bahçesi is on the right side as you start to go down the hill before leaving the town.

We were the only foreigners there and it was fascinating to see a bit more local colour. A coach load of school children arrived while we were there and one or two of them tried out their English on us. We were offered the opportunity to partake of a mud bath or to have a massage. Perhaps next time. We then drove from Pamukkale back to Denizli and, following the signs to Antalya, drove for what seemed like ages through the back streets of Denizli where traffic had been diverted because of the road re-surfacing taking place there as well. Denizli was a surprisingly large town. We then drove up a long, innocent-seeming slope, into the mountains and up on to the plateau. We turned off at the signs to Tavas/Aphrodisias and crossed the high upland plateau. The soil was obviously very fertile here, with fields of olive, pomegranates and.... Cheap International Phone Calls

There are lots of ways to get cheap phone calls to and from Turkey, most use the Internet in some way or another, and most rely on you having a good connection to the internet. However I was recently recommended a site called Web Call Direct (http://www.webcalldirect.com), which makes use of your internet connection, but only to initiate the call. It works very well, and between any two 'normal' phones. For example, you can use it to ring between a Turkish Mobile and a UK land line.

Sample call rates:

  • Turkish Mobile to UK Mobile (or vice versa):  11p/min
  • Turkish Mobile to UK Land line (or vice versa): 4.8p/min
  • Turkish Land line to UK Mobile (or vice versa): 7.4p/min
  • Turkish Land line to UK Land line(or vice versa): 1.1p/min

Questions and AnswersQ & A

If you have a question about any aspect of life in Bodrum, let us know and we'll post it to this section as an open question. But here's the important bit - we need your help to answer the open questions; so please don't be embarrassed - send us your questions, and answers.

New Questions:

Q41: We are looking at getting some of our garden covered with Bodrum Stone (Kayrak), does anyone know roughly how much this is per square metre (laid), and can anyone recommend someone who can do it?
A41: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q40: Can someone tell us when the yearly property tax ("council tax"), is due, how do we know whether we need to pay it, and what we can do to pay it (can we pay online?).
A40: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

New Answers:

Q39: I have to submit tax on renting my villa. However there are outgoing expenses for upkeep and maintenance. Can these expenses be offset against the tax which I owe? Would it be easier next time to submit my tax return in the U.K.?
A39.1: Tax returns have to be in by 24th March for the previous year. Normally forms are available by 5th March it is called a 1000B.  So the next time to declare is march 2010 for income from 2009. Each year they allow a certain amount to deduct last year was 2400TL from the total first then you deduct a further 25% for expenses (this is a lot easier than giving every receipt and writing on the forms everything you paid for the property). You also have to give a declared value of the property , you pay anything from 15% of the balance of income in tax up to 7,500TL and it goes up in stages. The tax office in Bodrum are very helpful . If you want to declare now you will be fined for lateness. Also yes, you should declare in Turkey as your income has come from here. -- SimplyVillaManagement.com
A39.2: You can offset expenses but whether or not you submit taxes in the UK & Turkey depends on your residence & domicile status as far as the UK & Turkish tax authorities are concerned. Rule changes in 2008 mean the UK authorities are keener than ever to tax all your income from anywhere in the world if you are UK resident for tax (not the same as having a residence permit). At the same time the Turkish authorities are also very keen to ensure you get taxed on any income you receive in Turkey ... especially if you are resident here. There is a Double Taxation Agreement between the UK and Turkey but life can get very complicated trying to claim and prove tax relief to avoid being taxed twice. Best to take professional advice but generally try to only get involved with one national tax authority if you can. --Steve
A39: Something to add? let us know!

Q38: After the heavy rain over the winter it's time to re-paint the outside of my house - the paint is down to bare concrete in many places. What products should I use for best protection against damp, and for longevity?
A38.1: You need a good quality sealant/damp resistant (diluted with water) coating prior to painting with a good quality topcoat. Unfortunately it is still difficult & expensive to get really good quality paint in Bodrum - everyone still seems to work on the assumption of re-painting every 1 or 2 years with paint that resembles liquid plastic.  We bought good quality masonry paint from the UK which is far longer lasting. Filler from the UK is also much better quality than the Turkish brands, even if more expensive. You also need to be careful not to decorate in high temperatures as the paint will dry too fast and not adhere to the surface. --Steve
A38: Something to add? let us know

Q35: Where can I get my knives sharpened?
A35: Any butcher would do it. --Yesim
A35.2: As you enter Bodrum driving to the bus station, pass the prison-  about 100m on the left there is a shop called "IZMIR bıcakcı",he is a professional sharpener; the only one in Bodrum. --Lady Cullen
A35: Something to add? let us know!

Q33: Can anyone advise where you can buy mosquito nets for over beds in the Bodrum area and how much they cost?
Q33.1: I know this is not the Bodrum area, but Ikea have them very cheap (link). --Annie
Q33.2: I have bought over-bed mosquito nets in Koçtaş last year, they were about 50YTL. A bit expensive but really good quality. -- Mihane
Q33.3: You can find cheap versions (15tl for a double) at the market. Ask those who sell fabrics, towels, etc.  These are the rectangular variety, needing 4 hooks in the ceiling but offering more space above the bed. --Leslie
A33: Something to add? let us know!

Paying your Electric Bills automatically from your Turkish Bank
Some of you will have noticed that in the Muğla region, Tedaş have now been semi-privatised, and are now Aydem. One of the most important changes is that billing is now monthly (rather than every 2 months). Aydem are also a lot more aggressive towards late payments of electric bills, and will cut off electricity once a bill is just one month overdue. To prevent this, and for a more efficient way to pay, simply take any electric bill to your Turkish bank and they will set up an automatic monthly payment, and you'll never have to worry about paying a bill again. Please consider this - especially if you do not live in your house all year round. It takes minutes and really is easy.

Paying your Phone Bills automatically from your Turkish Bank
As with your electric bill, if you'd like to set up an automatic monthly payment for your phone or internet service, simply take any bill to your Turkish bank who will setup an automatic monthly payment for you.
