Dear Reader,

Welcome to issue 14.

In our efforts to keep the newsletter free, weow introduced a donation system. So please s've nupport us and donate, especially if you've saved money through something featured in the Bulletin.

To read more about donations, please take a look at this issue's PC Corner which explains everything in a little more detail.

We've also taken this opportunity to answer a few questions and create an "about us" section on the website, so if you're curious to know more about who 'we' are and why we set the newsletter up, please take a look at the Who Are We? article on the website.

Our Impact on Others

Our feature this issue comes from Çimen, who offers a thought-provoking article about how we look at ourselves.

How aware are we of our impact on others?

Sit back for a while and go back in time. Maybe a month, a year or maybe even ten years...

See if you can remember a time where you can relate to any one of the following situations;

…a talk you dreaded with someone you did not like.
…time you had to spend with someone you did not particularly like.
…a conversation you decided to have with someone despite knowing you would not be understood.
…your worst fear coming true
…a time when you had an expectation from someone which did not happen.
… attracting an undesired result.
… a loved one breaking your heart for a reason you fail to understand.

Now go to that exact moment and try to remember the feelings which were present. Not only in you but also in the person you were with. It is highly likely that there was fear, resentment, lack of self expression, disappointment, lack of confidence, frustration and a feeling of “I wish this was over!

No doubt most of us are very familiar with these feelings and that the more we have them, the more likely we are to experience the above situations regularly.

So what exactly brings about these dreaded negative feelings? Click HERE to continue reading...

Bodrum Bulletin Donations System

Isn't it free?

Yes, the Bodrum Bulletin is a free resource for the Bodrum Peninsula - no money is taken for subscriptions, advertisements or any part of the making and distribution of the newsletter.

It was set up with the simple mission to provide a medium for communicating information around the peninsula, and to support and promote local trustworthy businesses through sections such as the Readers' Recommendation Section.

The newsletter was never set-up to make money, and this is not our wish or our goal, if it was you'd have paid for something a lot sooner!

Inevitably though there are costs involved in the newsletter;

  • Subscriptions and distribution: To efficiently handle your subscriptions and to ensure that we adhere to strict anti-SPAM rules, the subscription and mailing is handled through a specialist third-party company. Although these costs are small, they currently amount to about £10 per newsletter
  • The website: Fortunately web hosting is fairly cheap these days, but hosting www.bodrumbulletin.com costs a small amount each year. I hope to move it to a faster server in the near future if donations allow.
  • Our time. Each newsletter takes about 15-20 hours to pull together

We do everything we can to keep the newsletter free, and will continue to do so, but inevitably we have to consider ways to cover our costs.

So why should I donate?

  1. Because we've saved you money:
    • Are you an advertiser who's taken advantage of reaching over 800 readers - for free!
    • The Classifieds Section: Have you managed to find something second-hand that you were going to buy new?
    • The Discount section: Did we save you 20TL off your meal perhaps?
    • The Readers' Recommendation section: Did you find a good honest business straight away who did a good job and didn't overcharge you?
    • The Travel-Watch Section: Have we made you aware of flights that you otherwise didn't know about?
    • The PC Corner: Have you managed to learn something about your computer that's saved a call out to your computer fixer?
    • The Finance Section: Have you saved money through our advice on interest rates, and articles on deposit accounts perhaps?
  2. Because you feel that even free services deserve to be rewarded sometimes, and you want to see it get better.
  3. Because you've made new friends:
    • Have you met up with other people through events published on the Bulletin?

How do I donate?

It's easy, and takes only a couple of minutes. All donations are taken through PayPal, however you DO NOT need to have a PayPal account (you just need a credit card). Note: all donations are taken through PayPal for your security.

  1. Easy, simply click any one of the donation links at the top of this newsletter, or on the left of the website.
To make it more fun, you can choose an item (e.g. a bottle of Efes beer), which has a specific donation value.
  2. You'll be taken to a secure PayPal donation page:
    • If you have a PayPal account:
      • On the right hand side of the page, enter your PayPal username and Password, and click "Log In".
    • If you DO NOT have a PayPal account:
      • On the left hand side, under "Don't have a PayPal account?", click "Continue"
      • Now enter your billing information, together with your contact information (this is needed only so that PayPal can send your PayPal transaction receipts and can contact you if necessary to complete the transaction. Click the "Review Order and Continue" button.
  3. On the next page, confirm the donation details. Ensure that the donation is the correct amount, and that it's being sent to editor@bodrumbulletin.com.
  4. Click the "Donate xxxx Now" button
  5. PayPal now displays a payment confirmation page to let you know that you have made your contribution successfully. You may print this for your records.
  6. Click "Close" to end the process.
  7. Thank you for your donation!
If you have any problems, or concerns, just contact us.

Questions and AnswersQ & A

If you have a question about any aspect of life in Bodrum, let us know and we'll post it to this section as an open question. But here's the important bit - we need your help to answer the open questions; so please don't be embarrassed - send us your questions, and answers.

I'm still working on a way to organise these a bit better on the website - so please bare with me! For the meantime, please use the website search facility (top right of every page) to help you find content.

New Questions:

Q52: We would like to bring out a 25 litre drum of damp treatment paint. Can anybody advise us on the easiest and cheapest way of getting it there?
A52: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q51: There are many beautiful scenic routes around the peninsula, but with the increased tourism the litter is awful and getting a lot worse; the other day someone dumped a load of tomatoes, beer bottles and water bottles by the dozen. As a non-Turkish speaker, is there anyone I can complain to?
A51: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q50: For a while now I've been on the lookout for filler, however all the shelves are full of grout! Has anyone come across something that's like the filler you get in the UK (ideally pre-mixed).
A50: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q49: I would like to try and arrange for us to retake our vows with an Anglican priest officiating. Does such a person exist in Bodrum? I have heard that there is an Anglican community in the town but do they have a priest?
A49: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q48: Can anyone tell me where I might find suppliers of above ground swimming pool in the Bodrum area?
A48: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Rule

New Answers:

Q47: Our property has mains water, but we've never registered with the Belediye to get an account number. What's the procedure, and is there a charge (even though we're already connected)?
A47: If you live in Yalıkavak you go to the su office and take a copy of your tapu and passport and the number of the meter for your building (It is on the copper ring under the lid) and they will create a folder for you. Then you have to go to the council offices and they have to sign it 3 times in 3 different offices, and then back to the su office, who will come out when the meter is due to be read and put a number on your pipes and and then you get a bill. It will cost you for registration and rental of the meter, I cant remember how much it was for me but it was over 300TL, I presume it is the same procedure no matter where you live. --Carol
A47: Something to add? let us know!

Q46: I am thinking of buying a 5m long, 70hp motor boat in Turkey. I have heard that there is an annual tax based on the size of the engine, and also that I need an 'operators licence' for a boat of this size. Does anyone know if this is correct, or where I can get more information?
A46: The law regarding boats is supposed to be changing in July this year. Up till now the yearly tax on boats was extremely expensive, that's why you see so many boats here with foreign flags. From July it is hopefully going to be a fraction of what it has been in the past and affordable. We don't have a private licence (evrak) at the moment so I can't give you more info, sorry. To use a boat in Turkish waters you have to have some sort of captains licence, translated into Turkish. Unless you have some sort of RYA qualification that you can use for this, I believe that some people have been quite creative with computers! --Lyn
A46: Something to add? let us know!

Q45: We already have a Turkish bank account and we use internet banking. How much can we transfer in one go from the UK to turkey?
A45: There is no limit... provided you don't try and do it with cash! --Steve
A45: Something to add? let us know!

Q44: We are looking to drive our English car to Turkey, we currently understand that the car can stay in Turkey for a maximum of 6 months. Can someone explain whether this is 6 months in one year, or can you re-enter and stay for (for example) 11 months in one year?
A44.1: You'll regret it!!! It's not until you get a Turkish plated car that you know what freedom is! When you have a foreign plated car your every trip has to be considered, if you have to leave the country unexpectedly (even if it's a day trip to Kos) you have to have the car removed from your passport and placed in customs or take it with you. Some years ago my car overstayed the 6 months, was impounded and kept in the custom's car park for which I paid a daily astronomical rate.  I then had to pay for a customs official to accompany me to the border (we were in Istanbul), plus of course I paid all the fines! I think the law says 6 months in an one year and I think they use calendar year not a 12 month period. It really does become a headache and dictates your life. My advice - Turkish car dealers have some fantastic offers at the moment - buy one locally and never have to worry. --Jane
A44.2: You cannot re-enter for 6 months. You should also be aware that in the 6 months that you have the car in Turkey, you cannot leave the country without it as it is recorded in your passport. --Steve
A44: Something to add? let us know!

Q43: Does anyone know where I can buy vanilla pods or vanilla essence here in Bodrum? I have never noticed it in the Bazaar.
A43.1: The spice stalls at the markets sometimes have them. I once asked a stall owner and he produced them from behind the counter. They were not cheap as they were imported, but it was relative to UK prices. --Annie
A43.2: You can buy vanilla pods in Metro, they are in the spice section. --simplyvillamanagement.com
A43.3: Metro has vanilla pods. --John
A43: Something to add? let us know!

Q42: Has anyone any idea how I would find a removal firm that would take a part load/load of various things from Bodrum to Ankara?
A42: I've used Bodrum Nakliyat before - they seem to be efficient; www.bodrumnakliyat.com --Lady Cullen
A42: Something to add? let us know!

Q40: Can someone tell us when the yearly property tax ("council tax"), is due, how do we know whether we need to pay it, and what we can do to pay it (can we pay online?).
A40.5: You can use your sicil number as your first password on line then change it once you have registered all your information - Dawn
A40: Something to add? let us know!

Unanswered Questions:

Q25: I am looking to drive my Turkish car to England (and then back within the mandatory 6 months).
25.1: Do you need a residents permit to buy a new car and take it out of the country?
25.2: Will a green card insurance cover the car driving to England, or do you need international insurance?
25.3: Do you need a visa to leave the country with the car and how much do they cost for 6 months?
25.4: If you have done this journey which insurance company covered your car while you were in England?

A25: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q26: I have heard that if you hold a residence permit you can obtain treatment and consultations at state (devlet) hospitals and clinics the same as citizens (albeit for a considerably cheaper fee), does anybody have any info on this at all.
A26: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q18: Does anyone know of someone willing to be a 'Leader' for a just-for-fun line dancing group?
A18: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q15: Does anyone have seeds or cuttings of Chilean Jasmine (Mandevilla laxa) or M. splendens 'Alice du Pont' that they want to get rid of, or know where I can get some?

Miscellaneous

Petrol and Diesel prices to fall - The Energy Market Regulatory Board (EPDK) in Turkey has introduced a maximum price per litre for petrol and gas. Both will be fixed at a lower rate (currently about 3.04TL per litre for petrol, and 2.49TL per litre for diesel). This represents savings of up to 8% in the Bodrum area, or about 10TL on an average tank. Read more HERE in the Zaman.

Taxi Prices - Bodrum Taxis are to scrap the pricey after-midnight tariff, read more HERE, courtesy of The Hurriyet.

Annual Property Tax - 2009 annual property tax is (over)due. Go to your local Belediye to make this year's payment.

Vehicle Tax - Don't forget that the second payment for 2009 is now due. We recommend that you pay this at the Bodrum tax office (tax paid online through a Turkish bank has a tendency to end up being paid to the Muğla tax office). To see how much you'll have to pay see the 2009 Vehicle Tax Calculator.

Paying your Electric Bills automatically from your Turkish Bank
Some of you will have noticed that in the Muğla region, Tedaş have now been semi-privatised, and are now Aydem. One of the most important changes is that billing is now monthly (rather than every 2 months). Aydem are also a lot more aggressive towards late payments of electric bills, and will cut off electricity once a bill is just one month overdue. To prevent this, and for a more efficient way to pay, simply take any electric bill to your Turkish bank and they will set up an automatic monthly payment, and you'll never have to worry about paying a bill again. Please consider this - especially if you do not live in your house all year round. It takes minutes and really is easy.

Paying your Phone Bills automatically from your Turkish Bank
As with your electric bill, if you'd like to set up an automatic monthly payment for your phone or internet service, simply take any bill to your Turkish bank who will setup an automatic monthly payment for you.
