Bodrum Children's Library - THANKS!

Libary I would like to say a big thank you and a huge recommendation to Mary from the library in Bitez. My sister has been here for a month on holiday and her two kids and my two have had a great time going to the library twice a week, playing with the toys, hiring the DVDs, and playing in the garden. The library has been brilliant and kept the kids really happy. I will continue to go twice a week.

Mary has spent a lot of time and money in setting up the library while being pregnant and in the scorching heat so all you Mums and Dads come along and support her, as this is something we have all spoke about and said we wish somebody would set up, but now that its on our doorstep not enough people are going!

So why not pop along, your kids will love it.

A Short Break to Istanbul

Our feature this issue comes from readers Steve and Sally, who share their recent short break to Istanbul.

Having some Turkish Airlines air miles to use up, we decided to take a 3 day break in Istanbul at the beginning of July – both to escape the Bodrum heat and see the Bosphorous area of Istanbul. We also wanted to find out if such a trip was viable in a few days.

Ortakoy, Istanbul We wanted to be in a green area near the Bosphorous and Ortaköy village but not somewhere expensive. We booked two nights at the Çiragan hotel (http://www.ciraganhotel.com), not to be confused with the ludicrously expensive Çiragan Palace Kepinkski Hotel right opposite. Is it really worth paying 10 times more for the room, £16 per minute for phone calls or £25 for afternoon tea!? A double room was 95TL per night for 2 people with Turkish breakfast 10TL each.

We took the Havas bus to Bodrum airport (now 17TL each). Curious how inflation is now at record lows and yet price increases are still frequent and always well over 10%. At Istanbul airport we also took the Havas bus into the city centre (10TL) as far as Taksim Square. The taxi drivers there tried to convince us that because of the traffic, a taxi ride to the hotel would be 30TL. Having been in Turkey long enough to have got wise to such con tricks, we walked a 100 yards, flagged down a taxi and got charged 10TL!

The hotel was only 50m from the sea, the 5th floor room..... Click HERE to continue reading...

Zeytin Altı Restaurant
If you've been travelling between Gümüşkaya and Geriş on the way out of Yalıkavak you may have spotted that there's a new cafe/restaurant opened up on the main road. This family run restaurant offers a great selection of Turkish dishes, all freshly cooked on the grill BBQ, at very good prices (Mezes from 4TL, Sea Bass/Bream from 10TL). Most of the vegetables used are grown in their own garden.

With fantastic views from their roof terrace looking back to Yalıkavak it's well worth a visit.

Recipe: Fresh Lemonade

Fresh Lemonade
(Makes about 2 litres)

Fresh Lemonade

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 1/2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 10-12 lemons)
  • 6 cups cold water (to dilute)

Method:

  1. First, make a simple sugar syrup by gently heating the sugar with 1 1/2 cups water in a saucepan until the sugar has completely dissolved.
  2. Put the sugar water into a pitcher with all the freshly squeezed lemon juice. Add approximately 6 cups of cold water to dilute (more or less to the desired strength), then refrigerate for 30-40 mins.
  3. Serve with ice and sliced lemons.

If the lemonade is too bitter for your taste, then use more sugar, and if it is too sweet just add more lemon juice!

Questions and AnswersQ & A

If you have a question about any aspect of life in Bodrum, let us know and we'll post it to this section as an open question. But here's the important bit - we need your help to answer the open questions; so please don't be embarrassed - send us your questions, and answers.

I'm still working on a way to organise these a bit better on the website - so please bare with me! For the meantime, please use the website search facility (top right of every page) to help you find content.

New Questions:

Q56: Has anyone seen Condensed Milk (or an equivalent), available anywhere over here (I know you can get it from Kos, but was looking for somewhere a little more local!)
A56: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q55: I would like to know if anyone has suggestions as to where I can join a gym by the month? I know that the marina offers this option, but I would like other options in the Bodrum area too.
A55: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q54: We currently pay 4.5TL per ton of water supplied to our apartment. Our water supply comes from an underground reservoir/well. Our apartment has a meter, and we pay the money directly to the developer who built our sitesi.  Can anyone confirm if the rate we are paying is reasonable?
A54: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q53: Has anyone started the process of getting their Tapu changed to Kat Mulkiyet? If so, what is the procedure? What documents are required and do they need to be originals or copies? Does the new Tapu have to collected at some future point from the deeds office? As 100,000's of new documents are going to have to be issued, is there going to be a massive backlog??
A53: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Rule

New Answers:

Q51: There are many beautiful scenic routes around the peninsula, but with the increased tourism the litter is awful and getting a lot worse; the other day someone dumped a load of tomatoes, beer bottles and water bottles by the dozen. As a non-Turkish speaker, is there anyone I can complain to?
A51: Perhaps just coincidence, but the rubbish is being cleared up. Yesterday they had reached the outskirts of Torba and they are still going strong, hopefully all the way to Yalikavak! -- Jill
A51: Something to add? let us know!

Q50: For a while now I've been on the lookout for filler, however all the shelves are full of grout! Has anyone come across something that's like the filler you get in the UK (ideally pre-mixed).
A50.1: The nearest I've found is "Dış Cephe Macunu" made by Caparol. Comes pre-mixed in 4kg or bigger containers from Koçtaş or similar. It is slightly more liquid than UK filler and does not adhere to surfaces as well. It is also not designed to be smoothed down afterwards so you have to ensure a smooth surface when you put it on. For small jobs, either inside or outside, your best bet is to bring filler back from the UK. --Steve
Caparol
A50.2: There is a product on sale at Koçtaş & I would imagine at places like Önderler or Tekzen the brand name is "Kale Color" and the description on the label is "Kalın Akrilik Macun" it is described as exterior surface smoothing putty, it works very well as filler but only in thin layers if you try to fill too deeply it will belly or sag. --Chris Hicks
Kale

Q46: I am thinking of buying a 5m long, 70hp motor boat in Turkey. I have heard that there is an annual tax based on the size of the engine, and also that I need an 'operators licence' for a boat of this size. Does anyone know if this is correct, or where I can get more information?
A46.2: Re qualifications. When in UK, complete the two day level 2 powerboat course (RYA course) at about £230, a very good course that when completed gives you the International certificate of competence on motor/power boats up to 10 mtrs. The RYA offer a free Turkish translation for this qualification which is accepted by the authorities here for private boat use. Your boat & engine must be registered in Bodrum. --Gaz

Nayir Carsisi No 7-8  Ataturk Cad is a turning on the left coming from the bus station towards the centre of Bodrum about half way. Miscellaneous

Taxi Prices - Bodrum Taxis are to scrap the pricey after-midnight tariff, read more HERE, courtesy of The Hurriyet.

Annual Property Tax - 2009 annual property tax is (over)due. Go to your local Belediye to make this year's payment.

Vehicle Tax - Don't forget that the second payment for 2009 is now due. We recommend that you pay this at the Bodrum tax office (tax paid online through a Turkish bank has a tendency to end up being paid to the Muğla tax office). To see how much you'll have to pay see the 2009 Vehicle Tax Calculator.

Paying your Electric Bills automatically from your Turkish Bank
Some of you will have noticed that in the Muğla region, Tedaş have now been semi-privatised, and are now Aydem. One of the most important changes is that billing is now monthly (rather than every 2 months). Aydem are also a lot more aggressive towards late payments of electric bills, and will cut off electricity once a bill is just one month overdue. To prevent this, and for a more efficient way to pay, simply take any electric bill to your Turkish bank and they will set up an automatic monthly payment, and you'll never have to worry about paying a bill again. Please consider this - especially if you do not live in your house all year round. It takes minutes and really is easy.

Paying your Phone Bills automatically from your Turkish Bank
As with your electric bill, if you'd like to set up an automatic monthly payment for your phone or internet service, simply take any bill to your Turkish bank who will setup an automatic monthly payment for you.
