Welcome to issue 16. This issue we've got a great feature from reader Ken, who took a coach tour to the South East of Turkey; exploring the rich culture and history of Turkey that most of us haven't yet seen. Our donations are going well, so this issue we want to offer something back to show our commitment to improving the newsletter. We all know that weather forecasts often differ greatly from the actual weather. So for now, all donations will go to a fund to set up a live, 24hr webcam and - if we get enough donations - a weather monitoring station, which will allow you to see live weather conditions any time of the day (or night), at all times of the year. Naturally, all donors will receive free access to the live service. Please enjoy the read, and just a reminder that we're always looking for reader submissions; so if you have something to share; from a question, tip, or recipe, to a travel feature or event, please do get in contact. |

| Bridging the GAP a flavour of South East Turkey |
||||||
|
Our feature this issue comes from regular reader Ken, who recently celebrated his 50th Birthday by taking a coach tour which took him and his wife to the South East of Turkey exploring some of Turkey's most stunning scenery and travel destinations which are often overlooked.
For many of us living on fixed incomes around the Bodrum peninsula we have a regular weekly routine, the visit to the pazar, supermarket shopping, swimming and sunbathing along with all the rest of normal daily life. On the whole most of our needs are met in the area without travelling much further afield and this is our main experience of Turkey. Some of us will have made trips perhaps to Marmaris, Fethiye, Pamukkale or Istanbul. I wonder how many of us have been adventurous enough to go 'off the beaten path' and discover just how enormous and richly varied a country we live in. Probably relatively few, myself included - until last month that is.
When my wife Nükhet asked me what I wanted to do to celebrate my 50th birthday, after only a moment's reflection I said I didn't want a mini-break in Europe like the old days, what I really wanted was to see more of Turkey, the country I love and live in all year round. That's how we came to be in an Istanbul car park at 11pm with a bunch full of strangers waiting for a bus. Not just any bus, but an air-conditioned coach that would whisk us off on a 5,000km magical mystery tour of south east Turkey (the Tigris and Euphrates delta region) over the next 10 days. Sounds a bit hard work for a holiday, doesn't it? But it turned out to be one of the most memorable trips of my life.
We took a package trip with Etstur, one of Turkey's leading tour operators. Though independent travel has always been my thing, as we discovered to have done this would have required a huge amount of planning, as a lot of the places to visit are quite remote or with considerable distances in-between. Having the itinerary organised with all hotels pre-booked makes sense and in my experience now I'd say this is definitely ....Click

| Recipes: National Cherry Day |
||
|
This issue's recipes all come from Ursula Haselden,
author of Orchids for Aphrodite, who points out that we didn't highlight the 18th July National Cherry day, so time to correct that, with her delicious set of six cherry recipes! MA CHERIE AMOUR
On this auspicious day we attended the regular St Marina’s Day party at the marina in Scotland where we keep our boat Cappelle. I marked the day by making Fresh Cherry Cake (see recipe Bodrum Bulletin Issue #013). Delicious. (It was the authentic version, for the luscious cherries I purchased were imported from Turkey.) Something to remember! – if not gorged, glowing red, winking and pouting, from a heaped bowl on the patio table, while sitting in the shade dangling paired cherries as earrings – is that cherries are best friends with kirsch, maraschino, dark chocolate, almonds and pistachio nuts.
Bon appétit! Ursula Haselden

Q & A |
|
If you have a question about any aspect of life in Bodrum, let us know and we'll post it to this section as an open question. But here's the important bit - we need your help to answer the open questions; so please don't be embarrassed - send us your questions, and answers. I'm still working on a way to organise these a bit better on the website - so please bear with me! For the meantime, please use the website search facility (top right of every page) to help you find content. New Questions:No new questions this week!
New Answers: Q55: I would like to know if anyone has suggestions as to where I
can join a gym by the month? I know that the marina offers this option, but I
would like other options in the Bodrum area too.
Unanswered Questions: Q56: Has anyone seen Condensed Milk (or an equivalent), available
anywhere over here (I know you can get it from Kos, but was looking for
somewhere a little more local!) Q54: We currently pay 4.5TL per ton of water supplied to our
apartment. Our water supply comes from an underground reservoir/well. Our
apartment has a meter, and we pay the money directly to the developer who built
our sitesi. Can anyone confirm if the rate we are paying is
reasonable? Q53: Has anyone started the process of getting their Tapu changed to
Kat Mulkiyet? If so, what is the procedure? What documents are required and do
they need to be originals or copies? Does the new Tapu have to collected at
some future point from the deeds office? As 100,000's of new documents are
going to have to be issued, is there going to be a massive
backlog?? Q52: We would like to bring out a 25 litre drum of damp treatment
paint. Can anybody advise us on the easiest and cheapest way of getting it
there? Q49: I would like to try and arrange for us to retake our vows with
an Anglican priest officiating. Does such a person exist in
Bodrum? I have heard that there is an Anglican community in the town but do
they have a priest?
