Dear Reader,

Welcome to issue 18. Another packed summer issue for you. Thanks to your generosity, the webcam and weather station have now been bought, so donations are back to normal; remember that your donations will help keep the Bodrum Bulletin free.

With help from the British Consulate in Bodrum, our feature this issue looks at the LOCATE service from the British Foreign Office. This simple service is designed with one goal in mind; to put you in touch with loved ones quicker in case of emergency when you are away from the UK.

We've also added in a few useful information extras; from where to get effective flea, tick and sandfly treatment, to an English TAPU (Title Deeds) translation, and a residency fee update.

Webcam Update:

Bodrum Webcam

8.20pm Tuesday Night, and 6.15am on Wednesday morning saw our first sunset and sunrise test images from the new Bodrum Bulletin webcam, which has been funded through readers' generous donations. Over the next few weeks we'll be tweaking the positioning of the camera slightly, making the image better, and improving the webpage, and hopefully adding a time-lapse video of the previous day. For now though, you can see the testing pages by visiting: http://www.bodrumbulletin.com/webcam. FYI, the webcam is positioned just west of Yalıkavak, and faces west.

The Weather station

The Bodrum Bulletin weather station will follow hot on the heels of the webcam. It has now been purchased (again thanks to all those who donated). Hopefully by the next issue we'll have something up and running.

Winter Home Needed

Murphy

My name is Murphy - I am a very lovely English springer spaniel - with a lovely nature. My Mum and Dad are going to UK in December for 4 months and I am looking for a very kind person / family who could foster me - I heard my Mum talking today about putting me in kennels with my sister - but I think I would hate that because I like to be near people and like a lot of fuss.

I am very easy to look after and do not like too much exercise as I have a hip problem - I am only 2 years old but sometimes feel like 12!

My Mum would pay for my keep + extras as long as I am well looked after.

Please save me from the dreaded kennels

Love Murphy xx

Marina Vista, Gulluk; Buyers Beware!

We, along with many others, purchased property at Marina Vista, Gulluk. There is currently a legal dispute taking place between the landowner and the developer ILOS Insaat as well as some of the purchasers whose TAPU's have been remortgaged to third parties. The site at Marina Vista is incomplete and there is no immediate prospect of it being completed.

We understand that properties on the site are still being advertised for sale and would wish to warn other potential purchasers to be wary of any offers of sale whether at the market value or particularly at reduced rates.

Feature: Planning for an Emergency; LOCATE

The British Foreign Office has launched a new service designed with a simple goal in mind; to help communicate with family members in case of an emergency such as a forest fire, tsunami, or terrorist attack. The idea is simple; just login to the government portal, provide emergency contact information, and logout. The service is designed to be used by anyone travelling away from the UK for any length of time; not just for those of us living abroad.

Of course many of us are concerned about providing personal information, however the LOCATE service is clear that it's used to: "tell us where you’re travelling to so our embassy and crisis staff can provide better assistance in an emergency such as a tsunami or terrorist attack.", and information is protected by the Data Protection Act, and will only be shared with other governmental or law enforcement agencies under a court order.

Recipe: Figs (İncir)
Figs

From Wikipedia:
FAO reports the 2005 fig-production was 1,057,000 tonnes; Turkey was the top fig-producer (285,000 tonnes), followed by Egypt (170,000 tonnes) and other Mediterranean countries. Aydın, Izmir and Muğla region, which used to be called antique Caria region, are the top fig-producers in Turkey.

Figs and health
Figs are one of the highest plant sources of calcium and fiber. According to USDA data for the Mission variety, dried figs are richest in fiber, copper, manganese, magnesium, potassium, calcium, and vitamin K, relative to human needs. They have smaller amounts of many other nutrients. Figs have a laxative effect and contain many antioxidants. They are good source of flavonoids and polyphenols. In one study, a 40-gram portion of dried figs (two medium size figs) produced a significant increase in plasma antioxidant capacity.

Flea, Tick, Mosquito and Sandfly Protection
Advantix treatment for dogs, delivered to Turkey from under 15TL per treatment.

Ticks, sandflies, fleas

As we all know, it's important to ensure that your animals are correctly treated against fleas, ticks and sandflies. Many of us purchase flea 'drops', and sandfly/tick/flea collars from our vets, which offer an accessible and effective treatment against biting insects. However this can come with a reasonable cost - the average price of 1 treatment of flea-drops for a medium sized dog is around 20-25TL, and should be applied monthly.

However, if you're looking for a cheaper, and - arguably better - solution, we have found a very popular mainstream product called Advantix (manufactured by Bayer Health Care Group), While not perfect, it offers:

  • Protection against flying insects such as sandflies. (Frontline Plus and other products only protect against fleas, ticks and some lice; hence why Turkish vets recommend the sandfly collar).
  • Advantix actively repels and kills insects (most treatments only kill insects once they have bitten).
  • Good longevity; proven to be effective against swimming.

However, as with everything, there's a slight disadvantage; Advantix is slightly more toxic, so care must be taken if the animal will be around children. Advantix is also only available for dogs, and cannot be used on cats.

Now, the good news is that I've found a supplier, who will post straight to Turkey, with prices including shipping from less than 15TL per treatment (dependant on order size).

We've used this company several times now, and orders have arrived safely, and promptly and have not been damaged or opened along the way. We have tried Advantix on numerous dogs over here and have not had any reason to turn back to the more expensive and less effective method we were using before.

For ordering details, go to: http://www.vetmeds4pets.co.uk, then select "Advantix" from the Products drop-down on the left hand side. Note Vetmeds4Pets also stocks other dog and cat treatment products including FrontLine and Heartgard. Delivery to Turkey is currently from £2.50.

Puppies in Need of a Caring Home

Yalikavak Puppies 1

Can you help home these 5 neutered female puppies who have had a sad start to life?

The 3 sandy-coloured pups were left on their own several weeks ago when their mother was killed in a car accident. They are about 5-6 weeks old.

The 2 black puppies are about 3 months old, and although they are still with their mother, they are desperately in need of a good home.

Yalikavak Puppies 2

Currently all puppies are being cared for by Fulya and her staff at Animana veterinary clinic in Yalıkavak by the Garanti Bank, however they deserve a fresh start with a new family! All puppies will be vaccinated and neutered.

Questions and AnswersQ & A

If you have a question about any aspect of life in Bodrum, let us know and we'll post it to this section as an open question. But here's the important bit - we need your help to answer the open questions; so please don't be embarrassed - send us your questions, and answers.

I'm still working on a way to organise these a bit better on the website - so please bear with me! For the meantime, please use the website search facility (top right of every page) to help you find content.

New Questions:

Q59: Does anyone know if there is an indoor and outdoor swimming pool between 20-25m long - I would be looking to use it 2 times a week purely for exercise purposes so it needs to be not too crowded. I know about the Devlet swimming pool in Gümbet, but also that it costs 100TL per month - which is extremely expensive.  Can anybody help with an alternative?
A59: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Rule

New Answers:

Q52: We would like to bring out a 25 litre drum of damp treatment paint. Can anybody advise us on the easiest and cheapest way of getting it there?
A52: The weight of a 25 litre drum would make any transport very expensive. We got 3 cans of 5 litre paint out from the UK but only via a friend who was driving out to Kos in a car. He bought it over on the ferry to us in Bodrum. Your best chance would be to find someone who is bringing out a container of private goods and get them to include your paint. --Steve
A52: Something to add? let us know!

Q49: I would like to try and arrange for us to retake our vows with an Anglican priest officiating. Does such a person exist in Bodrum? I have heard that there is an Anglican community in the town but do they have a priest?
A49: The nearest Anglican church is in Izmir. Bodrum International church has an American pastor. --Steve
A49: Something to add? let us know!

Unanswered Questions:
Note: the full list of unanswered questions are listed on the website HERE.

Q58: I bought my apartment off a builder and received my TAPU in 2006. I also paid the builder to get a Habitation Certificate however, he has now gone bust, and I do not have the certificate! Does anyone know if I can continue the already started process, or if I have to start again, can anyone explain step-by-step as to how I get a habitation certificate?
A58: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q57: I had a container of household effects shipped here when I arrived in Turkey, for which I paid taxes and a deposit on entry. I am now looking to leave Turkey and head back to the UK. I would like to leave the house furnished and give away a lot of my stuff so that I don't have to pay to ship it all to the UK. I realize that my deposit would be forfeited (1,600TL). I have been told that if I don't renew the permit for my household effects they triple the deposit amount and fine me. They say "what comes into Turkey must go out", but does anyone know what happens if I leave Turkey leaving behind everything I paid tax and the deposit on?
A57: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q56: Has anyone seen Condensed Milk (or an equivalent), available anywhere over here (I know you can get it from Kos, but was looking for somewhere a little more local!)
A56: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q53: Has anyone started the process of getting their Tapu changed to Kat Mulkiyet? If so, what is the procedure? What documents are required and do they need to be originals or copies? Does the new Tapu have to collected at some future point from the deeds office? As 100,000's of new documents are going to have to be issued, is there going to be a massive backlog??
A53: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Translated TAPU (Property Title Deeds) - PDF

After a reader request, we've taken some time out to translate the main elements of the TAPU (Property Title Deeds), into English. Please feel free to download it for your reference. The English translations can be seen next to the Turkish in blue text.

Apart from the obvious things to check such as the address and your details, it's essential you check the following two items:

  1. "Kat Mülkiyeti": If you have a finished house, this box should be ticked, if it's not you should seek legal advice to get it changed.
  2. "Satiş Bedeli": the correct purchase price in Turkish Lira should be listed here, if you have anything else then you should seek legal advice to get it changed.

If anything looks out of order, we urge that you get good independent legal advice (check the Readers' Recommended directory where we have several trusted solicitors). Unfortunately there are endless tales of estate agents, solicitors, and even TAPU office clerks who weren't quite as trustworthy as they should be.

Miscellaneous

Annual Property Tax - 2009 annual property tax is (over)due. Go to your local Belediye to make this year's payment.

Vehicle Tax - Don't forget that the second payment for 2009 is now overdue. We recommend that you pay this at the Bodrum tax office (tax paid online through a Turkish bank has a tendency to end up being paid to the Muğla tax office). To see how much you'll have to pay see the 2009 Vehicle Tax Calculator.

Paying your Electric Bills automatically from your Turkish Bank
Some of you will have noticed that in the Muğla region, Tedaş have now been semi-privatised, and are now Aydem. One of the most important changes is that billing is now monthly (rather than every 2 months). Aydem are also a lot more aggressive towards late payments of electric bills, and will cut off electricity once a bill is just one month overdue. To prevent this, and for a more efficient way to pay, simply take any electric bill to your Turkish bank and they will set up an automatic monthly payment, and you'll never have to worry about paying a bill again. Please consider this - especially if you do not live in your house all year round. It takes minutes and really is easy.

Paying your Phone Bills automatically from your Turkish Bank
As with your electric bill, if you'd like to set up an automatic monthly payment for your phone or internet service, simply take any bill to your Turkish bank who will setup an automatic monthly payment for you.
