Dear Reader,

Welcome to issue 19. Thanks to reader submissions, we've got another bumper issue, so please enjoy, and keep the submissions coming!

We're pleased to announce that both the webcam and the weather station are now up and running. We've had a few problems getting there, and every now and then the hardware needs a nudge, but please check the pages: Webcam, and Weather Station, and let us know what you think. Also, please note that access to the detailed Weather Station page is currently free, however in the near future, this page will be locked so that only people who have donated to the Bodrum Bulletin will be able to access the information. So why don't you click the donation links below to secure your access to the page!

WANTED: Gardener

I am looking for a gardener who can visit my property on an ad hoc basis, probably twice a month, who knows how to cultivate flowers and vegetables.  Ideally they would be English, but at least someone who has a knowledge of gardening and can speak some English.  I would be happy to pay 70TL a day, twice a month.  I already have Turkish gardeners who do the watering and weeding and they would continue to do that.  If you know of anyone, please contact me via email.

WANTED: Italian Language Teacher

An extremely nice Turkish gentleman, who already speaks English and French, is looking for someone (preferably a native Italian speaker) to help him to start learning Italian.  I understand he wants to be able to use everyday Italian so I guess the focus would be on practical language rather than grammar - what some of us would call 'Holiday language plus'.  If you can help or know someone who might be able to, please contact myself (Keith), or Bulent direct on the details below.

Summer Hangover

The first of our features this week comes from reader Ceylan.

Do you feel like as if you have a hang over from all that's being going on and all those friends & family visiting throughout the summer? Especially August! August is the zenith of summer "fever" as always forever, for me at least.

Of course it is never like the "Summer Holiday" days of the Cliff Richard song & movie where & when we've had the love of and the best holiday in our lives (so we thought). We are not teenagers any more fortunately -I would not like to go back, I am most happy if not content with where I am at right now. On the contrary now summer means extra sheets or towels to be washed and hang to dry and then to be folded and put in the cupboard again (if there is time in between two sets of visitors), or constantly cooking, cleaning, setting table and last but not least listening to extra emotional luggage of each visitor which takes most of my most precious time from the garden, my pets (including chickens) and myself. My self always comes at the end of the list though. When the summer fever is present I hardly have time to read a page from a long sought after book (such as, Orchids for Aphrodite by Ursula Haselden: a must read!) or to look in the mirror to plug yet another white or stray hair from an eyebrow.

To be present all energetically at any moment or be responding to each guests any whim replaces the top of the routine list of our lives and when one can not be ever present or be a witch to create miracles according to their whims they snap back instantly "but you live here all year round; I am on holiday!". I can kill an entire continents population for this statement: precisely since we live here all year round WE ARE NOT ON HOLIDAY until after you all return back to your beloved urban lives and habits, I wish to say (or rather shout) … but never could: Turkish hospitality would never allow one to complain about & after guests. Yes I can hear you! And yes I am now while writing it, it is never too late, as the saying goes: better late than never, I am learning.

One of my never realised dream projects is to write a "how to use instructions manual when visiting": so that friends and family would know when I say "oh but I do not eat breakfast" so that they'll help themselves instead of waiting to be served.... Continue reading this article online, HERE

Turgutreis Cats

And our second feature is from Cecilia Sev.

A sage once said, “There is no such thing as an ordinary cat”, and that I firmly believe. I’m not sure what it is about cats that I find so irresistible. Yes, they are cute and cuddly, but it’s more than that. Maybe it is the sense of dignity they exude, their apparent pride regardless of their often dire circumstances or maybe it is their inscrutable gaze that leaves you wondering how wise they really are. Turgutreis, my home for 6 months each year has many homeless cats. So when I am there I keep a bag of “yummies” in my purse and I dole out treats to the cats I meet on my way in and out of town.  I also share my terrace with “My Cats” five in all. At least I call them “My Cats” but strictly speaking they are not mine. Either they belong to an absentee owner or they are homeless but collectively they belong in the Site where I live. However when I am in Turgutreis, there is no doubt; they are “My Cats”.

And what brings them to my terrace is the food of course; clean cold water and store bought munchies, good stuff for hungry cats. First there is Blackie, pardon the unimaginative name, who swaggers about oblivious to the fact that his coat is shabby and bare in parts. Blackie has dignity in spades.  Although he eats the least of all, with his strange inimitable cry Blackie always has a “Thank-You” for me. I suspect that Blackie is female and probably not neutered.  Mercan, Fatty and Kizim are all sweet cuddly soft grey-tiger females and Mercan, I know, is neutered. Fatty, as you will have guessed, eats the most and always cries for more.  Whitey, now he is one cat who challenges my declaration of universal, unconditional love. A spectacularly un-neutered alpha male that all others cautiously avoid, Whitey is not a pretty sight.  His ears are chewed off and his off-white coat a map of battle scars.   Whitey invites neither a cuddle nor a hug.

But all of “My Cats”, in their own way, say thank-you.  They “hang around” and.... Continue reading this article online, HERE

Street Animals and Animal Welfare

Much has been said and written about the street animal situation on the Bodrum peninsula.

For information about how you can help click HERE, and if you're interested in what Turkish law says about animal welfare, read the article HERE.

In most areas, the Belediye has an agreement with a local vet to provide free neutering. Other areas are covered by a local Animal Shelter. The most up to date information we have about is noted below:

  • Bitez Belediyesi will pay for the treatment of street animals by vet, Burcu Kut, in Gümbet, (0252 319 34 04).
  • Ortakent, Yahsi and Konacik have a similar arrangement with vet, Önder Cevik, in Ortakent, (0252 358 59 93).
  • Yalikavak: Animana is currently negotiating an agreement with Yalikavak Belediyesi, please contact Animana (0252 385 52 00), for the latest information.
  • For Bodrum, Torba, Gümbet or Gündogan, contact the Bodrum Animal Welfare Association (0252 316 30 33) or the Torba Shelter (0252 337 14 25).
  • For Turgutreis, Bagla, Akyarlar, Derekoy, Kadikalesi and Islamhaneleri contact the Turgutreis Animal Welfare Association (0252 382 39 30) or the Turgutreis Shelter (0252 382 20 33).

If your area isn't mentioned above, we can only suggest that you contact your local Belideye.

Note: Information and associated documents have been supplied by Animal Welfare Association representatives.

Questions and AnswersQ & A

If you have a question about any aspect of life in Bodrum, let us know and we'll post it to this section as an open question. But here's the important bit - we need your help to answer the open questions; so please don't be embarrassed - send us your questions, and answers.

I'm still working on a way to organise these a bit better on the website - so please bear with me! For the meantime, please use the website search facility (top right of every page) to help you find content.

New Questions:

Q63: I was hoping to find out if there is a proper health food shop here in Bodrum or near surrounding area - similar to those in the UK with the weird milks, flours, grains, beans, seaweeds and vitamins and tinctures as I haven't been able to find one.  Also does anyone know where you can buy celery all year round or is it only seasonal here.  Also is there anywhere that has parsnips, swedes, sweet potatoes, sugar snap and mange tout or do they not have them here in Turkey?
A63: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q62: I have been using a digital camera for several years but would like to learn how to make the most of the camera (and possibly photo editing software like Photoshop). Does anyone know of any courses for this?
A62: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q61: I need to buy a residency permit to have the phone installed. I know it is possible to get a 3 month permit, however, I have read that it is possible to obtain a permit for a week or shorter which would be better for me. Can anybody confirm if this is true? Or do you know where I can find out?
A61: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q60: I have a holiday home near Tuzla.  I need to pay my property taxes in Milas.  Is it possible to make the payment from America?

New Answers:

Q59: Does anyone know if there is an indoor and outdoor swimming pool between 20-25m long - I would be looking to use it 2 times a week purely for exercise purposes so it needs to be not too crowded. I know about the Devlet swimming pool in Gümbet, but also that it costs 100TL per month - which is extremely expensive. Can anybody help with an alternative?
A59: Try the Salmakis Hotel in the Bardaçi area of Gümbet, not sure of price but at least its open all winter. --Umit
A59: Something to add? let us know!

Unanswered Questions:
Note: the full list of unanswered questions are listed on the website HERE.

Q58: I bought my apartment off a builder and received my TAPU in 2006. I also paid the builder to get a Habitation Certificate however, he has now gone bust, and I do not have the certificate! Does anyone know if I can continue the already started process, or if I have to start again, can anyone explain step-by-step as to how I get a habitation certificate?
A58: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q57: I had a container of household effects shipped here when I arrived in Turkey, for which I paid taxes and a deposit on entry. I am now looking to leave Turkey and head back to the UK. I would like to leave the house furnished and give away a lot of my stuff so that I don't have to pay to ship it all to the UK. I realize that my deposit would be forfeited (1,600TL). I have been told that if I don't renew the permit for my household effects they triple the deposit amount and fine me. They say "what comes into Turkey must go out", but does anyone know what happens if I leave Turkey leaving behind everything I paid tax and the deposit on?
A57: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q56: Has anyone seen Condensed Milk (or an equivalent), available anywhere over here (I know you can get it from Kos, but was looking for somewhere a little more local!)
A56: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Q53: Has anyone started the process of getting their Tapu changed to Kat Mulkiyet? If so, what is the procedure? What documents are required and do they need to be originals or copies? Does the new Tapu have to collected at some future point from the deeds office? As 100,000's of new documents are going to have to be issued, is there going to be a massive backlog??
A53: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!
