Dear Reader,

Welcome to issue 21. Another packed issue with two user submitted features; one from Ros, who writes about a medium in Kuşadası, and a second from Çimen who talks about a "Heal Your Life" seminar on the 31st October. We've also added an online interest calculator to the website, which makes light work of calculating the interest you'll get from your Turkish e-deposit accounts. Visit the calculator HERE. And last but not least - don't forget to try Melek's traditional Kısır Tabuli.

Thanks to all who have taken our feedback survey so far; we've been reading the feedback with interest, and have already implemented some of the suggestions. We'll keep the survey up for another week or so just to give the rest of you some extra time - please do fill it in - it's good to know how we're doing, and to know which direction you want us to take the newsletter.

Take the Bodrum Bulletin newsletter feedback survey NOW.

Happy reading,

David Good - Editor

Kuşadası Medium

The first of our features this issue comes from reader Ros Elliott-Ozlek.

A friend of ours recommended a medium she met in Kuşadası, so we invited her for supper and to ‘read’ for us one by one.

Kim was a lively lady from the north of England who now lives in Turkey. She told us that she used to be a probation officer but had changed her life and left the UK 3 years previously. We asked her about her psychic gifts and she told us she had been clairvoyant from an early age in the sense that she could see ‘spirits’ and had a lot of experience with this as she used to sit with terminally ill patients. She is clairaudient and clairsentient too, in that she can hear the spirits and sense their presence.

We set Kim up in the living room with a low table for her shells and stones which she likes to spread out and one chooses 4 of them which then help her get tuned in..... Continue reading this article online, HERE

Heal Your Life

This feature is written by Reader Çimen Sevanç, respected Turkish language teacher and Life Coach.

I have been a great admirer of Louise L. Hay for more than a decade. Not once has her philosophy proven to be wrong for me. This internationally renowned author and lecturer’s key message in her work is;
“If we are willing to do the mental work, almost anything can be healed.”

She explains how limiting beliefs and ideas are often the cause of illness, and shows how we can change our thinking-and improve our quality of life.
“Every thought we think is creating our future.”

In my observations, I have seen certain people finding it difficult to accept this philosophy. Strangely enough these are the people who are constantly sick, who have a very negative and skeptical approach to life or people who live within their boundaries. They seem to be so against this idea that they like to call it “Polliana work”. According to these so called “realistic people, “thinking positive these days seem to be an act of fooling oneself.... Recipes Recipe: Kısır Tabuli

This issue, Melek sends us this recipe for a Turkish classic; Kısır Tabuli.

The following delicious recipe is full of vitamins and minerals, not fattening at all if eaten by itself, and very satisfying. There is no cooking involved.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Bunch of Parsley very finely chopped by hand
  • 1 Bunch of Mint again finely chopped by hand
  • 2 Cups of fine Bulgur wheat, soaked in 1 1/2 cups of boiling water for half an hour and let down to cool down
  • 2 Tomatoes peeled and finely chopped
  • 1 Bunch of green scallions, finely chopped
  • Salt
  • Red Pepper
  • Paprika
  • Black Pepper
  • 1 Turkish coffee cup (about 60ml) of Olive Oil
  • The juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1/2 Turkish coffee cup (about 30ml) of Concentrated Pomegranate Juice; Nar Ekşisi: The best can be bought at the olive and cheese stands in the markets- they have no sweeteners... Supermarket brand names have a lot of sugar added in them
2 TBS of chili paste; (Biber Salçası). The home-made version is again sold at the markets from the nice local ladies

Method

Mix everything, you can use your hands to mix it with. It is both therapeutic and more tasty when hands are used... Serve on lettuce leaves....
Bon Appetit

Questions and AnswersQ & A

If you have a question about any aspect of life in Bodrum, let us know and we'll post it to this section as an open question. But here's the important bit - we need your help to answer the open questions; so please don't be embarrassed - send us your questions, and answers.

The comprehensive list of Questions and Answers can be viewed on the website - HERE.

New Questions:

Q66: I would like to park my car at Bodrum-Milas airport for 2 or 3 days, does anyone know what my best option is - should I just go to the normal airport car park?
A66: Know the answer, or have any advice? let us know!

Rule

New Answers:

Q64: Has anyone shopped around and can now recommend an agent to supply Earthquake/building insurance?
A64: We haven’t done much shopping around, but we have just bought our household insurance and earthquake insurance through our contact at AXA. Their office is on the main highway at the Gümbet junction between McDonalds and Carrefour, upstairs above the new Balık (fish) restaurant (walk round the right side of the building and up the stairs). Just follow the blue AXA Insurance signs. Although the insurance lady doesn't speak English, there is a Traffic fixer called Rıdvan who speaks excellent English in the room next door. Take any old paperwork and that will give them a good starting point. I believe we paid about 115TL for our Earthquake Insurance, and about 300TL for contents and buildings. -- Ed.
A64.2: We have an apartment in Yalikavak and are insured by British company Intasure, underwritten by Lloyds.  We had a power surge in June which destroyed a lot of electrical equipment, we had receipts for all repairs and replacements and they paid up no problems at all.  Advantage is you can read and understand the policy and no language problems.  They have just informed us they also do earthquake insurance. we have £1,000,000 building, contents £7500, emergency travel £1000, public liability £5 million - premium costs us £175. -- Margaret and Ian
A64.3: Earthquake (DASK) insurance is a fixed price based on the sq metres of your property, and appears to be set officially, so non-negotiable. A copy of your TAPU is required. Until this year, we arranged household, contents and earthquake insurance with the Koç Alliance office in Oasis, (0252 317 1513). We are now using an English-based company called Intasure. (+44 (0)845 111 0670). The price for earthquake insurance is about the same as before, but we saved about £50 on the house and contents. Like all these things, you can't be sure how good they are unless/until you make a claim! --Bill

Q63: I was hoping to find out if there is a proper health food shop here in Bodrum or near surrounding area - similar to those in the UK with the weird milks, flours, grains, beans, seaweeds and vitamins and tinctures as I haven't been able to find one.  Also does anyone know where you can buy celery all year round or is it only seasonal here.  Also is there anywhere that has parsnips, swedes, sweet potatoes, sugar snap and mange tout or do they not have them here in Turkey?
A63. There is a health food shop-in Atatürk street; Walking from town centre, on the left after small street next to shop with household goods on the pavement - he speaks English. --Doug
